How To Adopt Good Singing Posture

Here are some exercises and guidance on how to adopt a good posture for singing to improve your talent in singing.

I'm going to talk to you about how to align your posture for singing. Your body is your instrument so it's really important to align it and hold it properly. So, the first thing I want to do is to just relax your shoulders.

Just start rolling them, if you roll them backwards, it has the effect of also opening up your ribcage which is great. When you've got that, when you're relaxed, take your arms like this and rock from side to side, being sure to always keep your hips facing forward. You're rolling your body like this, but keeping your hips forward.

Next thing to relax is your neck, so drop your head down and roll it to the side and to the other side, and to the other side and to the other side, and then up and then just shake out. Shake your arms, shake your head, feel very relaxed, very floppy. Now, I'm going to show you an exercise that will help you to set up your posture for singing.

I want you to just completely flop forward, to start with. So, have your knees bent, your arms hanging loosely. Now, imagine you're picking up 2 heavy shopping bags and you can feel the weight of them.

Now, slowly stand up and unroll, always being conscious of these 2 heavy bags in your hands, that you lift them and lift them, when you get to shoulder height, let them go and your hands fly straight up. And then you just fall down and you'll find yourself very naturally open. You should feel yourself in a posture which has your ribs open, your pelvis forward but your knees and your arms relaxed.

This is a fantastic posture because it enables all your abdominal muscles to work and it keeps your windpipe open, allowing the air flow to just go freely. And there you have a quick guide on how to adopt good posture for singing.
