How To Apply Foundation Properly

A professional make-up artist discusses the tools needed for applying foundation and gives step-by-step directions on how to apply liquid foundation properly.

Hi. Today, I'm going to show you how to apply foundation properly and I'm going to use a brush - this is just like a really nice foundation brush which is just tapered at the top there and I'm going to be using a liquid foundation by MAC and you can use any type of liquid foundation or a cream foundation if you do have that. I've already prepped Sheena's face over here, I've applied moisturizer and a primer to the skin and that will just help set the foundation.

So, we just pour a little bit of foundation on the back of your hand there. And then just to warm up the foundation on the back of your hand, this will really help the foundation soak into the skin. Then you can dot it over her forehead and on the cheeks and the chin.

Then you begin to blend. Just gentle strokes will do really nicely and give a really nice overall sheer coverage. Always make sure you're going outwards from the face - in and then out in gentle strokes.

Make sure you blend sort of right out over the ears just gently so the skin tone is even, and don't forget to go over the lips. When doing this technique, try not to get the foundation on the eyebrows because otherwise you're going to have to wipe it off and it looks a bit chalky. Go right into the hairline.

You can either use a brush for this technique or if you have a sponge. Some people like to apply it with a sponge as well and it's the same technique that you'd use, just patting the sponge onto the skin very gently and just patting it out. Just blend under the jaw line but you don't want to go too far down the neck otherwise it can get onto clothes as well.

And when you do come to the eye area, you don't actually need to apply foundation over the eyelid, you just need to blend it and sometimes you can use your finger and just pat just into this area here just to sort of blend the shade of the foundation across gently into the skin tone but you don't need to apply foundation to the eyelid. And there you go, that's how to apply foundation properly. .
