How To Avoid Food Poisoning: Refrigerators
Most refrigerators in the U.S. are not doing all they can to prevent the spread of dangerous bacteria. Just a few safety checks and adjustments can save you and your family from a bad case of food poisoning. Find out what needs to be done.
Step 1: Store Safely
Prevent cross contamination by organizing your fridge in a descending scale, with foods that require more time to cook on the bottom. Clean up spills whenever possible with a mild disinfectant or antibacterial soap. Be wary of those "convenient" storage holders on the door. The milk seems to fit perfectly in there, but that's probably the worst place to keep it. Instead, move milk to the back shelf and don't keep perishables on the door.
Step 2: Fridge Maintenance
Double check that the temperature is holding steady, below 41 F (5 C) by using a thermometer. Make sure the rubber seal around the door is clean and clear of food debris. Pay close attention to the air tight seal. Stick a dollar bill between the door seal and fridge and try to pull it out. If it comes out easily, your airtight seal isn't keeping warm air out, get it replaced.
Done.
