Be wary if a shop that specializes in one field offers to fix a problem outside their specialty.

Check to see if your mechanic is certified by the National Institue of Automotive Excellence. This organization certifies and test thousands of mechanics to make sure they are skilled at their job.

Step 5: Word Of Mouth

Perhaps the bet way to avoid getting ripped off is to find a mechanic who has done good work for family of friends.
