How To Bandage A Hand

Our VideoJug experts show the recommended way to bandage a hand safely and securely. Feel confident using these first aid skills in an emergency.

Step 1: You will need…

  • 1 A roller bandage, 5 cm (2 in) in width
  • 1 Adhesive tape

Step 2: Stand in front of the person

Stand in front, on their injured side.

Step 3: Wrap bandage round wrist twice

Supporting the injured hand, position the tail of the bandage on the inside of the wrist and work from the inside to the outside wrapping the wrist twice so that the tail of the bandage is held in place.

Step 4: Take the bandage diagonally across

From the thumb side of the wrist, take the bandage diagonally across the back of the hand so that it is just touching the nail of the little finger.

Step 5: Take the bandage under and across the fingers

take the bandage under and across the fingers making sure the top edge meets the base of the nail on the forefinger. Remember to keep the fingertips visible.

Step 6: Bring bandage around the back of the hand

take the bandage diagonally across the back of the hand to the outside of the wrist and make a straight turn around the wrist then hold the bandage up.

Step 7: Repeat diagonal turns

Step 8: Two straight turns

Complete with two straight turns around the wrist and secure the end with adhesive tape.

Step 9: Check circulation

Check the circulation of the injured limb by pressing on one of the nails or skin of the hand until it becomes pale. Then release, and if the colour does not come back within 2 to 3 seconds, the bandage is likely to be too tight.

Step 10: Seek medical advice

….If symptoms are not immediately relived by reapplying the bandage more loosely, then remove the bandage and seek medical advice immediately
