How To Be A Best Man - The Speech
Comedian Dominic Holland and author of Being The Best Man for Dummies, Dominic Bliss give you the top tips on content, presentation and delivery of an excellent Best man speech.
It's normal to be nervous, everyone gets nervous before doing a best man speech
Stay Sober! Keep drinking to a minimum ahead of the speech as you'll need your wits about you and there's nothing worse than an unintelligible ramble delivered by a half wit. The drinks will be so much better when everyone's congratulating you on a brilliant speech.
Playing to a friendly audience
Keep it short and sweet 7-10 mins
Make sure you thank the right people
Body language- Stand up straight, pick three friendly faces around the room and move between them so you address everyone in the room.
Involve the room, name checks are good for engaging people
Research a few potent jokes to win the room then you're sorted
Make sure you project you voice. Get plenty of practise and vary the pace and tone to keep it interesting.
Confidence tricks- Pause before delivery and during laughs everyone will think you're supremely confident.
If you're talking about someone e.g. the Groom then look at them
Keep it PG rather than X rated,
Make sure all the glasses are charged to avoid interruption or distraction.
Use prompt cards and keep them simple. If its a 7 min speech have 7 cards.
Explain your relationship to the groom so everyone knows who you are.
Preparation is the key, re-draft your speech several times
If it's going well don't be afraid to do some adlibbing
Key Goals: Get some laughs at the grooms expense, wish the bride and groom well, thank everyone and (if you're single)-pull.
