In just three minutes, Stuart Thomas can give you the tips you need to be the star of the roller rink. Learn about proper skating etiquette, how to maintain your skates and learn cool tricks like side surfing, skating backwards, making jumps and more.
Things that make a good skater, is someone who is aware of other people around them. It's all great once you've learned to skate, but you have got to remember that there's other people in the rink that probably just aren't as good. When you're skating, try and keep your arms quite close to you.
Some people flap their arms around and might cause an obstruction to other people or knocking other people over. It's good to keep your skating into one area. If you're flapping your arms around, you're going to catch someone else or knock someone else over.
Also, you can lock your skates in front of other skaters if you're skating too wide apart. If you're skating within your shoulder's width, you should be fine, you shouldn't knock into anybody else and lock wheels with them. Some people, as they're skating, will lock wheels together and cause yourself to fall over.
The same with going backwards, when you're skating backwards, you want to be looking where you're going. Some people practice backwards just looking forwards, that's no good. You're going to crash and bump into someone.
Looking after your skates is another one. Make sure that your wheels and your bearings and your stoppers are good. It also helps to condition your floor.
If you've got bolts and nuts hanging off of your skates, you're going to damage the floor, and when you skate over them, you'll find that you'll trip over and there will be bits and pieces all over the rink. And once you get good at skating, it's always important to remember those who can't skate. Cutting people off who can't skate will only put them off skating further.
Once you get good at skating, you can take up other sports such as roller hockey, roller derby, dance skating and rap skating. Once you get good, you'll need a proper pair of skates that match the sport that you're going into. There's lots of places you can buy skates off the internet, but sometimes it's better to go into a shop where you can actually try the skates on and they can advise you of what size is better for you and for your sport.
So, once you get good at skating, you can progress to doing your own tricks and learning new bits and pieces. It's always good to ask another good skater, “How'd you do that?” I'm sure they'd be willing to teach you and show you. Once you get going, you can get into side surfing, you just keep both toes pointing outwards and your heels in.
Skating on your heels, both skates with your toes up in the air, and you just rock your feet left to right. Then you can get more advanced by turning that into the side surfing and onto one foot, once you get really good. It's always fun and great to practice doing little tricks, because you never know it might lead to another little trick that you can do.
Should I say about like, once you get good, you might want to take to doing some jumps. Once you get your balance right, you'll be wanting to be look at bending your knees right before you get to a jump and landing as flat as possible, bending your knees again. A bit more advanced, but I'm sure you'll get there.
And that's how to be a good skater. .
