In this video, I'm going to share with you how to be a tea artisan. Tea is a lifelong learning process. There are so many different kinds of teas, thousands and thousands, in fact.

To know every single tea, one really needs to be trying the tea out, not just tea from a particular year, from a particular estate, but the exact same tea from different estates, different year because different year would have different weather conditions. Different estates would have different terra. Therefore, tea would be ever so slightly different.

In order to be a good tea artisan, you also need to have a good feel of temperature, water temperature to be specific. You need to be able to know roughly based on the heat that's radiating from the kettle or from the steam that is coming out from the kettle to be able to tell roughly what the water temperature is. The other thing you might need to know is to have a feel of passage of time.

In a lot of the tea brewing process that we do in the tea house, I always encourage my tea friends instead of relying on a timer, to be able to feel the passage of time, to be able to know how long 30 seconds is like, how long does 40 seconds feel like, to just actually feel the passage of time. The mark of a good tea artisan is actually to be able to get to a situation where your tea friend might surprise you with a small tea sample without giving you any information whatsoever. As a tea artisan, you should be able to look at the tea leaf and tell whatever water you have, whatever equipment you have and brew the best possible cup by bringing out the best possible flavor coming out from the tea.

I think the most important bit really is about knowing who this tea friend who you're brewing the tea for, to know this person's likes and dislikes and brew the best possible cup by putting in a lot of your kindness and compassion into the cup. If a cup of tea were to be brewed with kindness and compassion, then that is the best possible cup of tea. And this is how you can learn to be a tea artisan. .
