Hello. My name's Dean Wilson and I'm the managing director of Dean Wilson Funeral Directors in London. Today, I'm going to talk to you about becoming a funeral director.
Being a funeral director really is a vocation and it's something you need to think about seriously before you embark on it. The best way to gain information to become a funeral director is to visit your local funeral directors and ask if they have the time to sit down with you and explain the funeral trade to you and possibly view their premises. It will be up to each funeral director as to what he tells you and what you see.
When you start to become a funeral director, you will need to start at the very bottom and this will include washing cars, polishing cars, fitting coffins, removing the deceased from hospitals and nursing homes, and everything else that's associated with being a funeral director. You can also gain a lot of information from the National Association of Funeral Directors and you can also embark on a diploma course which is a two-year home study which empowers to give you a recognized national qualification. Being a funeral director requires calm, tact, diplomacy, and you must be confident at all times as you are the centerpoint of a funeral, everything is focused on you on the day of the funeral.
In your career as the funeral director, one of the most upsetting things you have to do is arrange and conduct the funeral of a child. This is probably the most upsetting thing you will ever do in your life, so you really must be sure that the career of a funeral director is for you. Again, being a funeral director isn't about walking in front of shiny black cars to the top hound, there is yet a side to it too which isn't always pleasant.
And again, you need to sit down with your local funeral director and they would tell you all aspects of the job. .
