How To Become A Geography Teacher

How to become a Geography teacher. So, in order to be a Geography teacher in this country, you'll need a few things. First and foremost, a love of Geography.

Geography teachers, specifically the ones in secondary schools, do a lot of fieldwork. It's quite an interesting job. You're going to be going out and about working with pupils and showing them the landscape, perhaps both in this country and maybe even overseas.

It's quite an interesting job to do. But it is something you're going to need to love while you're standing in the rain in a cagoule. So, a couple of things you're going to need.

Firstly, you do need GCSE English, Maths and Science at grade C or above in order to teach in this country in a maintained school. You're going to need a degree and most commonly, this is going to be a Geography degree, possibly with Qualified Teacher Status or that's perhaps something you can do afterwards. You don't necessarily need a Geography degree but you will need a degree that includes Geography and Geographical studies.

Most commonly, people tend to do their degree and then go on to do a Post Graduate Certificate in Education and there are lots of different universities that offer this. That's a one year course following your degree which takes you through the theory of teaching and also practical work in schools to obtain the skills that you need in order to teach the subject. And then once you've gained that qualification, you'll be awarded QTS or Qualified Teacher Status and that will allow you then to teach.

Most commonly, Geography really is only taught as a subject in secondary school. Although it's taught as part of the National Curriculum in primary schools as well, most commonly, teachers aren't specifically Geography based. But potentially, you could perhaps work in a primary school with your Geography degree and maybe become Head of Department in Geography or Head of that subject.
