This video guides you through the academic background and skills necessary to become a law teacher.
Hi, I'm Imran Bhatia. I'm due to start a training contract with the city firm next year and I'm a tutor at City Law Tutors in London. Today, I'm going to be talking about how to become a law teacher.
Generally, law teaching happens at either further education stage that is student studying for the A levels or at higher education that would be at university or beyond. To teach law and further educational level, a post-graduate teaching qualification is becoming increasingly useful and there are many specialized further education certificates that one can study for. Working for further education at law teaching can be part-time, so it can be alongside other work you may be doing.
To teach law at higher education, you may require a degree above and beyond your undergraduate degree. You may also require of the professional legal qualifications such as the LPC or the BPTC that is to be solicitor or barrister respectively. You will almost certainly require one of these qualifications if you wish to teach at a law school teaching either of those 2 courses.
As well as these academic qualifications, experience can be really important. You may need to show a potential employer that you may have had some degree of teaching experience elsewhere. Some post-graduate degrees enable you to teach at the same time to gain experience and some universities will actually encourage this.
It's also important to develop the necessary skills to become a law teacher. These can involve conveying information in a way your students will be able to appreciate, developing ideas, leading discussions on areas that may be controversial and provoke debates among students. All of these skills can be developed both through your study but also through other experiences that you may have and working within the sector in which you are teaching.
So, an academic background, experience and other skill development areas are all really important if you wish to be a teacher. .
