Whether it's strutting down a catwalk or glamming it up for a photo shoot, the world of modelling has an undeniable appeal. But do you have the physical requirements, as well as the perseverance, to become a model in the hugely competitive fashion industry? We spoke to a number of experts to find out more.

Step 1: Getting spotted

The larger agencies have teams of spotters who look out for new faces. Good places to hang out if you want to be spotted include fashion shows or any sort of fashion-related event.

Step 2: Getting an agent

If you want to approach an agency directly, send them two photos of you, ideally one of your face, and one of your body in a bikini. These do not need to be professional photos. They an just be normal snapshots, ideally taken without makeup on. If the agency decide to take you on, they will create a professional portfolio for you. Agencies like models to start your - they would consider fifteen a good age to get into an agency.

Step 3: Physical requirements

Be realistic. Mainstream fashion models need to be tall and slim, at least 5'8 or 5'9. A size 8 figure is considered a good size for a model. Ideally you should also have good, clear skin.

Step 4: The right attitude

Modelling is very hard work. It involves lots of long days, early starts, and long periods of just waiting around. You also need lots of perseverance, as you will probably have to deal with many rejections.

Hey guys, just reading through loads of blogs and just wanted to share my story :) I have recently been signed by a top agent in Milan, thanks to the assistance of personal model management! Have a look at the webpage, www.personalmodelmanagement.com ... They work with all of the top agents worldwide, I didnt have any experience but came across the website and thought I'd try it out. I signed up for a premium membership which I think is 25 euro, and I know everyone says not to pay but this is different, your not paying them to find you an agent or be your agent, they have a full online service for models with dietitians, nutritionists, personal trainers, all available for you to chat to and ask any questions! You can also chat to other members and models! The payments a one off, so theres no more expenses and your a member for life! When you register you submit 5 photos, nothing fancy just like pola shots, real natural and they don't have to be from a fancy photoshoot! Mines were taken on my phone! ... The team review them and if they think you are ready to work, start setting you up with international agencies! ... You don't pay for any traveling expenses, they arrange an advance for you, and if you require a photoshoot they arrange that with one of their top photographers in Milan! So its defo worth it!
