Sherridan Hugehes talks about how to become a probation officer
Hello I'm Sherridan Hughes. I'm a career consultant with career analysts. I'm going to talk to you today about how to get into various careers.
I'm going to tell you about how to become a probation officer. Probation officers work with offenders during the actual sentencing and after sentencing and on release. They are responsible for forcing the court orders, the licenses which the law places the offender under.
But their main job is actually the rehabilitation. They're trying to encourage the offender to understand that there is a future to help them practically and psychologically to live a more awesome life. They would need to understand that they, the offenders pretty often, there are times there are issues related to social situation which maybe impacting that person's behavior.
Probation officers work with many thousands to a hundred and twenty thousands of offenders each year so that's quite a lot of work going on. You would need to be over twenty years of age, at the moment there is a total recruitment freeze and the whole training program needs to be reassessed. So, but, prior to the freeze when needed to be recruited into the job of training to the role of trainee and then went through a two year training program leading to the probation qualifications.
It don't matter if you have a degree in essential science or some other subject, you still need to do that two year program and obviously that would be substantial to the job training as you will start once you are fully qualified as well. Probation officers obviously interacts to a wide range of other people as well of offenders themselves, social services, housing, the police station so they need to be good communicators and good teamwork goes as well. They'll often also sit on the parole board or informing the parole board about the real life or the risk of the offender and professional opinions.
Prior to the freeze and now in 2010, I would expect the selection procedure to be similar as a civil service job that basically based on selection process involved and role plays and the recurrent assessment in order to secure the position. So that is how to become a probation officer. .
