Hi, I'm Suzie Butler and I work for Career Teachers Educational Recruitment Firm based in London in the UK. I've been a teacher for the last ten years and now, I work with their training department to train all their teachers. How to become a school teacher.

So, to work in the UK maintained school or state school, there's quite a few qualifications that you need to have in order to do that. The first thing that you actually need is GCC in English, Maths and Science grade C and above, and that is a statuary requirement for any degree course that will include teaching. If you haven't gotten these, you can obviously retake them or perhaps do an evening course whilst you're training.

So, there are options but that is something you're going to need to have. All teachers have to have a degree, and there are lots of options and ways you can do that. You may choose perhaps to go to a university and actually gain a degree with teaching and the key thing you should be looking for is QTS which stands for Qualified Teacher Status.

That is the actual award given that allows you to teach in schools. Anything like just a basic teaching degree won't actually provide you with a qualification to be working in the school. So, you could choose to do a degree with QTS and that might be primary teaching or it might be say maths with QTS with a specific emphasis probably looking more at going to secondary school, or perhaps you might just choose to do a standard degree in any particular subject and then go on to teaching afterward.

That is a very common route for a lot of people following their degree to do a PGCE or Post Graduate Certificate in Education. There is lots and lots of places that offer this and you can usually find courses that will be suitable for you. Other options, there are a couple of other options for people perhaps who are perhaps experienced in working with children or youth, could possibly be working as an assistant in schools and that's a School Centered Insure Teacher Training or SCITT or it may be referred to as GTP which is the Graduate Training Program.

These are both school based qualifications in order for you to gain QTS but actually on the job whilst you're working. For more information on all of those courses, the best place to go is to the Training and Developing Agency or www dot tda dot gov dot uk where they actually outline all the specifications and all the courses that are available and schools that even offer the GTP. .
