Predominately, science specific teachers are based in secondary schools, so if you're thinking of becoming a science teacher, you'll generally be looking at teaching the age range of 11 to 16. To be a science teacher, you will need to have a few qualifications. Firstly, you will need GCSE in English, math, and science in order to teach in a UK maintained school, you'll need a degree, and most commonly, this is going to be in sciences.

Although you possibly will be teaching combined sciences in the school itself, when you actually become a teacher, your degree doesn't necessarily have to be combined. You may be looking at one specific science or perhaps even another degree which includes science within it. Once you've got your degree, you can then go on and do a post graduate certificate in education or perhaps if you're thinking about science teaching already, you could go and do a secondary teaching degree with science.

That will allow you to teach in school as a science teacher. Another option might be to teach at post 16 level, an A level science and in that situation, you would need a degree, a strong degree in science, but perhaps not the QTS qualification in order to teach it, it's sort of pre-16. So, in schools, secondary schools in England, science can be taught in a number of different ways.

It can be taught as a combined subject. In which case, if you're becoming a teacher of science, you'll teach all three: physics, chemistry, and biology. Or potentially, some schools actually require physics teachers, biology teachers, chemistry teachers.
