This informational video discusses what academic levels and other skills are needed to become a true university lecturer.
Hi, I'm Imran Bhatia. I'm due to start a training contract with the city firm next year and I'm a tutor at City Law Tutors in London. Today, I'm going to talk about how to become a university lecturer.
Obviously, the first thing with embarking on such a career is to have a very very strong academic record. You would need a two or one undergraduate degree level to be able to gain entry onto the required post-graduate courses. You would then need to do a masters degree in your chosen field, this would be one or two years of study, and then do PhD on your chosen area, this is typically between three to four years of study and also involves an individual research project.
This project is to demonstrate your enthusiasm for the field you have chosen and also involves making a contribution to the area of study. This need not be anything particularly new, this may just be expressing previous research and ideas in a new way or within a new framework. In addition to such an academic record, having publications in a recognized journal in the field, other teaching experience and other working experience within the sector could also be really useful, and in some cases, necessary to be able to gain a job as a university lecturer.
Other posts such as a post-doctoral research assistant are also very popular ways to gain entry into this field. In addition to an academic background, it's very important to have the skills to relay information in a way that would generate and maintain the interest of a large group of people as in a lecture. So, it would be worth trying to develop certain skills in conveying information in a way that would be relevant and interesting with the use of different tools such as handouts, visual aids and examples.
So to summarize, a strong academic record as well as other experience and development of other skills would all be needed to be able to forward your career as university lecturer. .
