How To Become An Actuary
Sherridan Hughes talks about how to become an actuary
Hello! I'm Sherridan Hughes. I'm a career consultant with career analysts. I'm going to talk to you today about how to getting to various careers.
This is how to become an actuary. Actuaries apply investment probability and statistical theory to predict the risk and the likely outcomes of certain investments. They might be informing decisions about pension funds or about investments, or about insurance issues.
But they will be warning the decisions in a consultancy advisory capacity using statistical mathematical modeling and analysis. So, in many respects, they are the buffins of the organization. Because it is a very analytical and intellectual role, the requirements for an actuary is very dangerous if they get things wrong, so the organization can be extremely costly.
So they are recruited from the highest academic achievers and there are certainly a lot of firm calls on it. Training can be on the job in the form of study part time for actuarial qualifications particularly you know it's encouraged that one would have done a degree in actuarial science or at least masters in actuarial science. Successful candidates will invest invariably in having a degree in mathematics, physics, engineering or highly numerical and logical subjects to demonstrate their ability to analyze and work with figures.
But equally, communications skills and the ability to write reports and to communicate findings and evidence reports are important as well. So that is how to become an actuary.
