How To Begin Breeding Pheasants
Tips on raising ornamental pheasants. This video covers housing, feeding and general care of ornamental pheasants and poultry, as well as how to care for the animals during the egg laying period.
If you're going to start out keeping a pair of pheasants, the ideal size of a pen is about sixteen by eight foot. Make sure you have got loads of cover in the pen and somewhere dry for them to roost at night. You have got to get them out of the wind.
Also in the feeding station, it is a good idea the food must be kept dry and clean of waste. You can run more hens with a cock bird. They can probably take up to about seven hens.
If you're doing this, you must make sure that there is an awful lot of cover for the hens and that the cock birds don't push the hens too hard. When I feed the birds, the best thing to use is about three quarts pellet to a quart of wheat and in the breeding season, switch over to a breeders pellet which has got everything that the bird needs to produce eggs when they start laying. It's best to take the eggs out every day so that they don't get into the habit of egg eating.
Keep them somewhere cool. Turn them preferably everyday or every other day until you have got a clutch that is big enough to start incubating and then put them down when it comes to hatching the eggs. What I use is a bantam or you can use the incubators.
If you use the incubators, you have to check specifically on the temperatures of the pheasants to the incubators. The main points again are that you should have a decent sized pen, as I said, sixteen by eight or something like that. That's got dry shelter where they can roost and get out of the rain.
It is crucial that they don't get wet and chill. They must be able to get into the dry. Feed, I feed once a day you can have hoppers that you use that you can raise off the ground at night, I prefer to feed so that you know how much they have had every day.
If there are too much food in there, then you give a little less otherwise you get problems with vermin and rats or other problems and that is how to begin breeding pheasants. .
