How To Bike Steep Terrain
This brief instructional video from Bikeskills.com will help you master steep terrain. Always wear a helmet and appropriate safety gear any time you ride a bike and especially when you are learning a new and/or applying a new skill.
Step 1: Exhibition
Hi, I'm Joe Lawwill from BikeSkills. What you just saw is how I ride down a steep technical section of trail. Today, I'm going to show you how you too can tame a steep trail.
Step 2: Plan Ahead
I always lower my seat before going down any technical steep section. As you approach any downhill, you need to scan the terrain. Look for a line that seems to have the best traction and the least amount of ruts. Be sure to look ahead as much as possible to make sure there isn't any abrupt deep ruts or large rocks at the end of your line.
Step 3: Weight Transfer
Transition your weight from the seventy-thirty attack position to the back of the bike. Most of your weight will be behind the saddle at this point. Load your weight into your pedals, which will force the tires into the ground.
Step 4: Modulate The Brakes
Modulate your breaks to keep from skidding. I like to look for a small jump-like transition that I can use to actually jump over deeper ruts.
