Malcolm Graham explains how to prevent access to predefined websites, such as MySpace, for parents to protect their children online, and what tools someone could use for this task.
If you are trying to block websites such as MySpace, it can be assumed that you are either a network administrator or a concerned parent. And as such, you must have full access to the computer or computers you wish to block. If you're a network administrator, I'm not going to be able to explain, show you how to configure your entire network in this short video clip.
However, what I'm going to do is explain to the concerned parent at home, some practical measures that they can use to block websites such as MySpace. The easiest and best way to do this at the moment as far as on the wire is using webcycle.dns.
com with which you can block out twenty five websites free of charge. If you need to block more than twenty five websites, then you have to pay a small fee. I've you're not willing to pay a small fee, then there are several software products available that will do this task and some of them are very sophisticated, so you can block whole categories of websites and whole industries.
For example, you could use something such as Netnanny and Cyberpatrol. The final way is to block websites in your browser. So you can actually put an exception list into your browser for websites, such as MySpace, which will bring up a page not found if you try to access the webpage in your browser.
Having said all that, if you're running this software on the PC and the person you're trying to prevent getting access to this content is a little bit small and savvy, they can easily work around these settings and change the settings back again. So, this not completely bulletproof and also check history and maybe check internet traffic going through your roof and to see what the person is actually looking on the network. So that's how you block MySpace.
