Many parents worry about the type of content their children have access to online. Malcolm Graham of Limetree lists several different options available to parents to restrict access to certain websites on their computers.
As with many things relating to computing, there are several different ways of doing this. These have different positive and negative aspects. The negative aspects are usually complexity.
However, if you're a network administrator, in a short video like this, I'm never going to be able to explain to you how to configure your corporate network. If you are a concerned parent at home, I'm going to explain some easy ways to block your child's access to certain websites. If you're a parent, I know there's some software which you can use that is readily available, free of charge on the internet, that will allow you to select lists of websites or types of websites that you'd like to restrict access to.
One of the best ones which I've used myself is opendns.com. There is a free version of this software which allows you to block up to twenty-five websites.
If you need to block more than twenty-five websites, then you'll need to pay a small charge. If you're willing to buy some professional software, they come with more features and more advanced ways of restricting access to different types of content. For example, if you're using Windows, then you could use something like Net Nanny or CyperPatrol.
These are two very well-known software products. The final way is that you could simply block websites in your browser settings. However, if you do choose to do that, if your kid is a bit smart, then they could just simply switch these settings off.
