How To Bob And Weave
As Muhammad Ali said, "You can't hit what your eyes can't see," and that's why bobbing and weaving are key maneuvers in boxing defense. Here's how to float like a butterfly in the ring.
Step 1: Take Direction
As your opponent's fist comes your way, weave your upper body in a circular motion under and toward the punch. Practice weaving in both directions. You can also weave the opposite way, in the same direction as the punch to the inside of your opponent's arm : this is called bobbing to the inside.
Step 2: Stay On The Attack
Many times you're throwing punches, then going on defense, or vice versa. Start weaving right after your punch.
Step 3: Give 'Em The Slip
To bob, lead with your head away from the punch. This is also called "slipping punches." For example, if your opponent throws a straight right, bob to your left. Don't bob too far or you'll lose your offensive edge.
