How To Bowl Like The Big Lebowski

Going bowling? The world's greatest bowler, 'The Dude', shares some tips with our absolute beginner. Strike!

Step 1: Choose The Right Ball

If your bowling ball is too heavy, then you're asking for trouble. You'll strain your wrist. If the ball is too light, you'll end up throwing sloppy balls. Try and pick the ball that feels really good for you- something that weighs about 10% of your body weight is about right. Also, finger-holes: make sure they aren't too tight, or you won't be able to throw. They need to slip in and out easily.

Step 2: Chill Your Boots

When you have chosen the ball. Don't make the mistake of thinking that you look awesome bowling the ball really fast and aggressively. Power and speed is nothing compared to accuracy in this game, if you go for speed, you're going to bum out with like a 42, or a 44 over 10 frames.

Step 3: Assume The Position

It's best not go get too hung up on your technique- basically you should be loose and calm. But here are a few things to think about:
-If you are left handed, aim your second toe of your right foot at the front pin.
-As you swing, release the ball at the beginning of the upswing, just as gravity starts to act on it.
-Never look at the ball when you are throwing it, look at where you want it to go.
-You may want to swing your trailing leg out to the side, to help with your balance.
-Make sure your arm follows through so you don't spin it off course.

Step 4: Obey The Rules

Here are some bowling etiquette essentials:
- Don't go wandering off when you are due to roll.
- Never eat and drink on the lane- it's unhygienic.
-Always yield the right of way to the right of the alley. If you are ready to bowl, and so is your neighbour, the person on the right hand lane delivers first.
-Be a good competitor, who doesn't crow over the other competitors. Keep your celebrations nice and subtle.

Step 5: Believe You Can Bowl

Always believe you can bowl: "if you will it, it is no dream." Focus on making it happen. If you believe the bowling ball will hit the pins, then the bowling ball will hit the pins…
