Everybody who's ever roller skated has careened into a tree at some point. OK, not really. But just to be safe, watch this video that shows you two different ways to brake while using rollerblades.

Hi, I'm Stuart Thomas, and I'm going to show you some tips and tricks on roller skates and blades.

I'm going to show you how to brake on rollerblades.
There's a couple of techniques, we'll repeat the t-stop or the hockey-stop.

We will go through them and we'll show you step-by-step and how to do it.

I'm going to show you how to do t-stop on blades. It's quite simple; it's a good way to start and stop once you're going.

What you need to do is to put your feet in a position, one foot behind the other.
The top part of your is going to be your push-off and your brake, and your bottom part of the is going to be the direction you want to skate in.

So what you want to do is you want to push off and then all four wheels will drag behind in a shape, and what you're basically trying to do is use your wheels as a brake.

So you want to keep it nice and flat and anchored straight in a shape. If you're too far behind or too far in front, you're going to fall over.

Now I'm going to show you how to hockey-stop on rollerblades.

This technique's a little bit more difficult in that you have to plant your foot and be willing to throw the extra leg out and stop in time. I'm going to show you this technique step by step.

Once you're skating along, you want to pick a point of where you want to be stopping, and basically that would be your plant-foot.

So once you've planted your foot, you're going to toe your foot in and with your back foot that's coming around past it, you're going to throw that out and almost kick your heel out. Don't go too far or you're going to overshoot, but keeping it within your shoulder width apart.

So what you want to do is planting that foot, and really push into the heel which will make you stop.

Use your wheels. Use your weight; don't over-weight, because then you'll fall over.

And there're the two basic techniques on how to brake on rollerblades.
