Step 1: Oxford Tall Cap Shoes.
These are two Oxford tall cap shoes. It's a high polish on the shoe, which is commonly referred to as bulling, which comes from the military. To "bull" basically means to force or to push. You are forcing the polish into the grain of the shoe, and it looks very smart.
Step 2: Get a Good Cloth.
So first thing I'm making sure is that I've got a good cloth that's not got a lot of fibers on it. You may be tempted to use a traditional yellow polishing cloth. What will happen is if you use that, it will get snagged on the shoe and you will have little yellow bits all over it. So just make sure you get an old rag or a good cloth.
Step 3: Method of Polishing:
Then you just simply put it in the polish and start polishing it into the tall cap in little circles. You have to keep going here until you feel the polish start to get a little bit dry. At the moment it's still quite moist. This can take up to thirty minutes just depending on the nature of the shoe. If it's an older shoe it may take a bit longer. So you keep doing this until you find that you'll feel the polish hardening.
So now I've been doing that for a couple of minutes, I've got a little bit of water here onto the cloth and I'll just put that in with the polish. And again it just starts now to take a little bit of a shine again.
One of the things that people do wrongly when they do this is they put far too much water on and it soaks away and it won't take a polish. So when you put the water in with the polish, you start to get this effect here which you can actually see small circles.
Step 4: Repeat.
Once you see the circles thats when you know you're starting to bull the shoe. So now that I feel that there is quite a lot of water there, I will just put a little bit of polish on again. And I am just repeating the process all over, building up more layers.
Step 5: Done.
When you are doing this it would be a thousand circles that you've produced, or thereabouts. And as you can see it's starting to bull now. And it all goes back to what people think of you when they look at them. And that's just a bit done. I'm just going to keep polishing there quite lightly. And the shoes are bulled.
