How To Burp A Baby

Hi. I'm Laura Campbell from Babyladies, and I'm going to be giving you some tips on how to look after your newborn, and how to achieve the birth that you want. I'm going to show you how to burp your baby, and there's two ways.

I'm going to get my muslin cloth, because it's inevitable that there's going to be a little bit of mess. I'm going to take my baby, supporting her head from behind, and I'm just going to put her up on my shoulder. I'm then going to swap hands.

Use this hand to support her head, and this hand, I'm just going to go to the lower back and I'm going to just rub in a clockwise direction, and I'm going to keep doing that. It can take quite a bit of time. The reason I don't pat is because that can cause more air bubbles.

So you can get an effective burp from just rubbing. I'm not going to do a sound effect. You get the gist.

So the other way that you can burp your baby is to just have her sitting on your knee, again always supporting the head, put your muslin cloth over your wrist, and then we're just going to support her back like that. And again, we're just going to rub it in a clockwise direction, and that can bring up the burp. If you feel you need a bit more support, you can hold onto baby's tummy like this, and that will effectively bring up the burp.

It's quite a good idea, if you feel that baby's not taking the bottle to just give her a burp in between a feed, just to make sure that it's not because she has got air in her tummy and that's why she's not feeding effectively. So it's a good idea after a feed, when you're burping, to try and keep baby upright. The reason for this is if you lie them down, then obviously, they can sick up a bit of the milk that they've had.

So it's quite nice, even though you're burping them for a reason, it's quite nice to just keep them in that upright position, either on your knee or on your shoulder. And it's nice to have a cuddle. .
