Hi this is Mike, snowboard coach at the Hemel Hempstead Snow Center. Today I'm going to show you how to butter. Buttering is the fundamentals of freestyle snowboarding so I'm going to show you the basic variations of how to butter.

When you're buttering there's lots of different variations but one of the most basic ones is just kind of coming on to a press so you're putting all your weight onto the back foot, or the front foot. You know you're coming down a slope, coming out this way and just kind of letting the board come around, looking over your shoulder. So eventually what happens is you can just end up doing a 360 just coming down the slope, or a 180 you know just coming out like that.

Hoping onto your nose and then back onto your tail. So it's all about just tweaking the board and as you're coming down looking over your shoulder it comes round, then pop onto the nose and then back onto the tail. Okay, so before you start buttering what you want to be able to do on your board to start of with is just being able to pop off your board and just stalling it on the nose and tail.

So you want to be able to just go, stalling it on the tail and stalling it on the nose quite comfortably. Bouncing from nose to tail, like so. So if you can do that on the flat then it's not going to be a problem when you're coming down the slope.

Where you to start off with it's best to just practice on the flat, just being able to hold the position, you know, on the nose and holding the position on the tail. So that's the basics of how to butter. .
