Mandy Lehto from Colour Me Beautiful gives style advice on choosing a pair of cargo shorts: what body types work best with them and how to select the proper color for you.
Some ideas for choosing cargo shorts. These are a great summer staple and they'll suit virtually any body shape, particularly men that have a slightly slimmer build and a slightly finer bone structure, but right up to medium as well, can be great on tall blokes. The only ones I really wouldn't recommend to wear these is if you're short and stocky because of the nature of the shorts, they're very, very bulky; the fabric is quite thick.
There are lots of detailing and bulk around them; they will actually add a lot of size to the lower body so if somebody's quite short and stocky to begin with, it will tend to further bulk you out on the bottom half. So I wouldn't recommend this style if that's your build. Choosing the color, this type of color would be great.
You can have a lot of fun - that's the look of this - you can have a lot of fun putting patterns, colours, bright coloured t-shirts with this. You would style this because it's fun and informal; you would style this with very, very informal footwear – flip flops, crocs, casual slip-on trainers, you might wear this with Birkenstocks, again keeping the footwear very casual. Going all the way back to the top half of the body, because these are so bulky, you don't necessarily want to wear something very slim fitting like a tight tank top on the upper half.
Unless you've got quite a big build that will make the bottom half very heavy so you want to counterbalance the bulk of the bottom half with something quite loose fitting. Depending on the season, you might wear something like a heavier hoodie with that or layer up t-shirts together with a zip-front sweat-top. The look of that is quite casual; again, you wouldn't want to be wearing that in any kind of formal scenario.
I'm just going to show you another color variation of this if you find that that's too pale and you prefer to have something in a pattern that's also quite fun. Looking at this pair with the camel print on them, it finishes slightly longer, so this is why this is a good look for someone who's taller rather than short and stocky. This type of print will suit virtually any skin type, so you can't go wrong buying this particular color; bearing in mind that you try it on before you buy it.
Make sure it's not making you look too bulky. One top tip to finish off when you're choosing cargo shorts, just bear in mind it's a really utility garment you'll probably be spending a lot of time wearing it around the city. It's very easy to use, very easy to wear, and you'll probably be using the pockets a lot because there are lots of them.
So bear in mind, it's worth investing in a good quality pair, something like the lines at Top Shop, G-Star; they can go right up to lines in Selfridges, depending on how much you're willing to spend. But just ensure it's a good quality cotton that when you are loading up the pockets and actually using them for what they're intended for, that they don't stretch terribly out of shape. And that's how to buy cargo shorts. .
