In this video, we learn how to buy a pair of chef trousers.
Hi there! I'm Matt from the underground cookery school. And today I'm going to do a video cookery lesson for you. I just want to discuss chef's trousers ‘coz you can tell a lot about a chef just from the trousers he's wearing.
And the ones that I've got here are a traditional check and the reason why most chefs are wearing them is because they mask any stains that may go on their trousers, it sort of acts as a camouflage. There are two other trousers that are quite commonly placed in a commercial kitchen. Now, I'm sporting a pair of black trousers which traditionally have signified the rank of head chef.
It's rather like an army in the kitchen; everyone has different ranks or titles and different outfits to go with it. So you may also find a chef that's completely decked out it white is the traditional attire for a chef that has been awarded three Michelin stars, they also have a white apron. You take it through to the hat, so the rank of a chef would be represented by the height of their hat.
So what happened recently is trousers have become less formal. For example, something like that, you've got an elasticated waist band with a pocket, always useful for a chef keeping a tasting spoon in their back pocket. Also with an elasticated band they are a lot more comfortable if you consider you are standing around in a kitchen for 17 hours a day, you want something which is going to be durable, which you will be able to wash in the washing machine and then use possibly the next day.
You may need two or three pairs if you're working the entire week if you can turn them around quick enough. So there's a variety of different chef trousers, if you're a head chef—black trousers, if you're a three star chef white trousers, if you're a humble commis or possibly even a senior sous-chef then a pair of check would always do the trick nicely.
