I'm going to talk to you about how to safely buy a puppy. You need to know how to avoid various things - the puppy farmers, the scams and the dealers. It's a very important issue.

Buying a dog badly means you take home a puppy who, at best, could be very sick and die before it's an adult. And at worst, it could have psychological problems and behavior problems. It could mean that you have to put it to sleep before it's an adult.

You should always see a puppy with its mother. If it's a pedigree breed, paperwork. Health tests are necessary on most pedigree breeds these days and, if they're done, your breeder will have copies of those results and you will get copies of them.

A Kennel Club registration is a valuable document. It's somebody saying, “These are the parents of your puppy and I'm saying so”. There are registrations available with other bodies.

In my opinion, these are best avoided because they do not have the verified database that the Kennel Club have. Your puppy should be no less than eight weeks old and, ideally, no older than ten weeks. This is because of learning, your puppy learning how to behave and learning how to fit safely into your family.

It's best to be formed in that period. Your puppy should seem healthy and happy. It should run towards you.

It might pull your clothes a bit. It might bark a bit. A good breeder will also help you choose the right puppy from the litter.

The more bold one. The quieter one. The more intelligent one.

Which one would suit you? Your breeder should know them well enough to help you choose. Anybody selling puppies out of newspapers and on certain internet ads are possibly puppy farmers and scammers. Dealers will buy dogs cheaply, sometimes free to a good home and pass them on very quickly with no testing, to people like you.

If we are to irradiate the terrible trade of puppy farming, dealing and backyard breeding, it's down to you. Stop buying badly. Do your research.
