How To Calculate Area Of A Rectangle

To calculate the area of a rectangle, you need to use a ruler and measure the length of the base and the height and then just multiply them. You must give the units for the area in terms of centimetre or meter squared.

In this video, I am going to show you how to calculate the area of a rectangle. Now, a rectangle looks something like this. Okay, there is my rectangle.

Now, for the way to calculate the area of a rectangle is you take this length here, let's call it x and you take this length here, let's call it y. Now, don't get worried about x and y. They just represent numbers.

So, what you do is take a ruler and you measure this length here. So, this length here, let's say that's twenty centimetres, okay, and then you measure this length here, your y and this one here, that's ten centimetres. So, what you do to find the area - the area equals the base times the height.

That's the base and that's the height. So, all you do is you take your two numbers and multiply them together so we get the area that's twenty by ten. Twenty times ten, that's two hundred.

Now, the last thing when you measure area, you always got to give it in the right units. So, we measured that length there in centimetres and that length there in centimetres. That means this is two hundred centimetres and because we have squared it, we need to square it.

Now, if you were measuring the area of a rectangle, much bigger, say twenty meters by ten meters, that would be two hundred meters squared. You always have to quote the units whenever you measure it. Now, finally, what does that mean, what does one centimetre squared or what does this two hundred centimetres squared mean? It means that within here, if I draw little squares, like this, each one of these little squares is one centimetre squared so that means that in this rectangle here, there's two hundred of these little ones and that means two hundred lots of centimetre, one centimetre squared, two hundred of these little squares in here and that's what I mean.

And that's how to calculate the area of a rectangle.
