John, a maths tutor and secondary maths teacher, gives the viewers step-by-step instructions on how to figure out the gas mileage of a car. He uses the Ford Focus as an example for the car.
So now we're going to look at how to calculate gas mileage. The first thing you need to know is each car has its own miles per gallon. Let's take the miles per gallons of a Ford Focus.
The miles per gallon (mpg) of a Ford Focus is about 40 mpg. This means if we have 10 gallons in our tank, we can travel, 10 multiplied by 40 miles on that amount of fuel. This gives us 400miles.
Most of the time, we will fill our car up in litres. What we need to remember then is 0.22 gallons is 1 liter.
If you remember this, we can use simple conversion and use the same calculation. So let's say we have 15 litres. Now all we need to do is multiply this 15 by 0.
22 and that will tell us how many gallons we have. So if we have 15, we multiply it by 0.22, we just need to get a calculator, quickly work out, or do this in your head, this gives us 3.
3 gallons, I'm just going to put gal. And now, knowing the mpg of the Ford Focus was 40 mpg, we multiply this by 3.3 and we get 132 miles.
And this is how we will calculate gas mileage.
