Caramelised onions make a delicious side dish or garnish with almost any savoury dish you can think of. Find out how to make them in less than three minutes.
Hi, there. I'm going to show you how to caramelise onions, a very simple process. Now, I've already got the onions sliced up here.
I'm going to grab a little bit of butter and just throw it in a pan. It is quite important to make sure that the butter doesn't burn, so I'm going to keep one eye on that. I'm going to put the onions into a pan, and I'm going to add some Demerara sugar, which is my favourite sugar for caramelising, because you do get perfect caramel from that, and brown, as well.
A bit of salt, a bit of black pepper, olive oil, just to bind all those ingredients together, go in with my hands, give them a bit of a mix, and we're almost there. I'm pleased to say that the butter hasn't melted. I'm just going to ensure that the entire pan is covered with that.
There we go. And now, I'm just going to give that a little fry-off, for about a minute and a half. And then what we'll do is finish everything off in a roasting dish, and that's going to go in the oven.
Come back in a second, and we'll watch that process. Lovely. Well, those are definitely on their way, and we'll roast those off in the oven for about 25-30 minutes, I reckon on about 165-170 degrees.
Right, these look fantastic, I'm thrilled with those, really caramelised and lovely. Now, I'm just going to plate these up so that you can get an idea of the texture, but you could use these for anything really. They would be delicious in a burger.
What you can do is if you're having a Sunday roast, for example, you can just use that as a garnish - roast chicken, you can have that with fish, I think that if you just add that to any savoury dish on the side, everyone's going to lap it up. That's how you make caramelised onion. |Caramelised onions make a delicious side dish or garnish with almost any savoury dish you can think of.
