This is a must-watch video for all those who have lovebirds as their pets as it gives all the required means for lovebirds to have the right food, surroundings and how the birds should be entertained.
How to care for a lovebird. Make sure when you take the bird home, it is in a closed box with plenty of air holes. Never take them home in a cage because you could give more stress than you think, by winds, by other people in the streets, other animals that might be on the streets, so you keep them nicely closed so they can't see their surroundings nice and closed as possible.
Make sure before you let them out of the box, the cage is set up. The cage should be nice and big enough for them to spread out their wings and fly around. Otherwise, you want to make sure the bird is outside the cage most of the time.
You need to understand the cage is home for them to sleep, eat and go to toilet. So, inside the cage, you need sand sheets. Sand sheets are sanded paper which will help to take all the waste easily.
This should be changed everyday to every other day to maintain cleanliness to your guests. Food bowls should be topped everyday, twice a day and should be cleaned regularly. Otherwise, you don't want them to have the same food all the time.
You should give them different things like fruits, vegetables, otherwise be careful of which type of food you do give them otherwise some could make them sick, so make sure you consult your vet or your local pet store to make sure you give them the right fruits. Also, you can give them different fruits, nuts, seeds and honey in there, which give them to know what is in this world. Cuttlefish is a great inexpensive treat.
It is a cuttlefish bone which gives them extra calcium in their diet. Plus also help them from their beaks over growing. The beak continues to grow unless you give them nice and stiff to grip.
Millet is a natural treat for them and should be given every other day, two or three times a week. You don't give them too much because it is something which they love and enjoy to eat. You can also give them as there are extra vitamins.
It helps them to note down their weight as well. Make sure you clean the cage everyday to every other day, depending on how dirty it gets. Make sure you clean it with a disinfectant and specially a bird disinfectant as it destroys the bacteria but some disinfectants may harm your bird, so really be careful to which disinfectant you use.
Also with your birds, make sure that you must spray them every three months. Now, this can cause a lot of stress to the bird if they do have mites. It causes weight loss, causes feather loss and in extreme case, it can cause death, so as long as you spray for every three months, it kills the mites and protects the bird for three months and help your bird a happy life.
So, you want to make sure you get rid of those pesticides especially in summer when they are mostly around. Now with love birds, they can get bored very easily and do need a lot of interaction. Obviously, you can't be there twenty four hours a day so if really you can't keep them in pairs or more, you can give them plenty of toys, things like mirror toys, wooden toys, plastic toys and all different types of toys that you should find in your local pet store to keep them entertained.
If you can't afford to buy toys, you can also give them woods and plastics but you have to make sure that the product you are using is safe for the birds. Lovebirds love to climb, so make sure on their cage, there are horizontal bars so they can climb all the way to the top. Another great thing that is a must is the ladder.
You can't put trees on top to encourage them to climb a bit. You will find them by themselves climbing those ladders and they do like to be perched high in the top of the cage. Things like bells and mirrors are also liked by the birds.
They are used to love looking their own reflection. They love the noise of bell and love playing with them. Wooden toys are also great as well.
Make sure if you do want to make your own wooden toy, make sure you heat it first. These are treated. They do not rot and do not carr
