How To Care For Angel Fish

Want to know how to keep Angel Fish as a pet? These beautiful tropical fish are quite easy to look after, and are a favourite with aquarium owners. Watch our guide to keeping Angel Fish.

Step 1: The aquarium

A tank for Angel Fish should be set up in the same way as for most other tropical freshwater fish. Watch VideoJug's film “How To Set Up A Tropical Fish Tank”. Because of their shape, a tall tank with lots of vertical space is good for Angel Fish. They also like a tank with lots of plants. Because they're not very agile, Angel Fish like to have places where they can hide easily. A good water temperature for Angel Fish is about 24-26°C (75-78°F).

Step 2: Angel Fish with other fish

Try to always have at least three Angel Fish in a tank. This is because one of them will tend to be dominant, and if there are only two Angel Fish the dominant one will pick on the weaker one. Angel Fish can be kept successfully in a community tank with other species of tropical freshwater fish. However, you should be aware that Angel Fish can get quite large and they will eat fish that are much smaller than themselves, such as small tetras. Angel Fish are territorial fish, especially when they are breeding. If they have paired up and laid eggs, they will protect that part of the tank, and may become aggressive to other fish that enter that area.

Step 3: Feeding

Angel Fish generally eat the same food as other tropical aquarium fish. Try to give them a varied diet of flakes and pellets from different manufacturers, and occasionally treat them to live food such as bloodworm or brine shrimp.
