<p>Just finished watching both videos, some tips were excluded. It's wise to remove your corn snake from the tank for feeding, because it can injest the substrate which may prove to be harmful later on. Try putting it in temporary container, but remember to be gentle upon returning it to its original habitat, as it may become irritated or stressed and regurgitate its food...This is true with handling, as the videos mentioned. But handling should be avoided due to food reguritation, not because the snake prefers to be left alone after feeding. Food reguritation can also result from stress, which may spawn a tank that is too large. Be sure to adequatley fit the snake to its home, as constant snake vomit is no walk in the park for your snake or you. Bottled watter is pointless. Tap water will do just fine. In the wild, they feed on water packed with sediments, so unless you prefer it, you don't need to provide the snake bottled water. Also, in the other video, it says UV bulbs are required. This is an unnecessary item. Corn snakes do not require adequate UV exposer, infact, it can prove to be harmful to the snakes' vision. If your snake strikes at you repeatedly while handling it, you should wear work gloves of a sort until the snake is used to you. Handle it often (unless it has been fed) to speed up domestication. If you're having trouble with the temperature of the tank, try moving the habitat to a room that reflects your dilemma (i.e: cooler room for hotter tank). If your place can't keep the habitat at its cooler setting, try a darkening the room or cutting off the heat source for just a little bit. It is imparitive you don't forget to turn it back on after it reaches the proper temperature, though. Hope this information helps clear up any misconceptions or questions with corn snakes.</p>

<p>OK
I have just recently got an albino baby corn snake. In the beggining it was very friendly and liked to bo held and touched alot. I tried feeding her a pinky, but she wouldn't eat it. Now everytime I try to pick her up or touch her she recoils and acts like she wants nothing to do with me. The petstore also told me that they would eat crickets if the pinkies were too big for her. I can't find any baitshops around my area to feed her anything. I don't know what to do!
any help would be greatly appreciated!!
thank you</p>

<p>MARK AMEY SAYS Dear Viewers We have consulted Mark Amey to clear up some of the issues raised in the films and the feedback below. Mark says: - PINKIES If your snake won't eat, try defrosting the pinkies, and then they will find them more palatable - BABY SNAKE RECOILS (!) FROM HANDLING If your snake won't be picked up, the most likely reason is that it can feel you are nervous or stressed. Many animals are finely tuned to our emotional states, and the corn snake is no exception. Try and relax and get into a clam state of mind. Now, pick up the snake confidently, so it feels secure. Hope these help, please ask more questions, and Mark will answer them. For care sheets, please see. www.ameyzoo.co.uk. best regards, James at Videojug</p>

<p>Most snakes in general do not need UV and that has nothing to do with them being nocturnal. As predators they receive all the vitamins and nutrition they require from their food.

Herbivores need UV lightening because their source of nutrition is not rich with vitamins. To be exact they require sunlight in order to be able to bind Calcium so that they may build bone tissue.

At any rate, sometimes they simply decide not to eat- it happens.
Try putting a defrosted pinkie near them and make sure it's dark- due to their nocturnal instincts sometimes a feeding response would trigger.

Another option is to make a tiny puncture in the pinkie, the smell of blood more often then not will entice them to eat.

Hope that helps.</p>

Sounds to me like the shop sold it to you soon after feeding. It was scared because they are most defenceless when digesting, so it bit you then regurgitated as snakes do when their digestion is disturbed. It's been 16 days since you posted so i assume it's sorted by now but , for future reference, a snake should be left for a week completely on it's own before handling or feeding again. </p>

ANSWER TO DRY TIP OF TAIL:If the end of your baby corn snakes tail...

<p>ANSWER TO DRY TIP OF TAIL:If the end of your baby corn snakes tail is dry or a different color its because your not giving it enough moisture in its tank while its getting ready to shed its skin. Damp paper towels under its hide box will prevent this problem.what happens is when the old skin is coming off, the tip of the tails old skin stays on and it can cause serious problems because the old skin cuts off the blood curculation and the tip can fall off.:( its really sad so i thought i would inform you all. maybe if its not too bad you can put your snake in a bowl of WARM. water and let it soak for about five minutes. my baby snakes love soaking so yeah it wouldn't harm them in any way then try taking the old skin off the tip of the tail. Be very gentle.

ANSWER TO REGURGITATING PINKIES: This one is simple.. all you need to do is make sure that you have proper heating so your snake can warm up its belly to digest the pinkies. whats happening is it cant digest it because its too cold so your snake throws up. if it wouldn't throw up the pinkie would rot in its belly. so make sure your temp is around 80 degrees f. and it will be fine.

* I HOPE THIS HELPS CAUSE I WOULD HATE IT IF A PERFECTLY HEALTHY SNAKE WERE TO DIE CUZ OF THE OWNER NOT GIVING IT THE THINGS IT WOULD GET ON ITS OWN IN THE WILD.*</p>

The snake that wont eat. he or she may be ready to shed and they w...

<p>The snake that wont eat. he or she may be ready to shed and they wont eat when they are shedding. winter time also they tend to eat less, i was told by some one raising snakes for over 30 years. how you can tell if they are getting ready to shed is by looking at their eyes. they will start clouding up and the shed caps will be there. the shedding time depends on the snake. they start their shed from head to tail. if your snake does not shed n one piece, you will have to adjust the humidity there their home. you can trap the heat in the home with a towel or blanket across the top. and allow your heating lamp to be at one end. make sure there is always water in the home for them because it will allow their skin to stay moist enough to shed in one piece. if you do adjust the humidity in their home and they still don't shed well get the shed aid found in the reptile section. if works real well and will help for future shedding. FEEDINGS, most breeders and stores feed their critters in the cage they are in. so they will have a tendency to bite at first(not always). after bringing your snake home handle it often, so you can get used to each other. and NEVER feed him in his home. they will think each time you put your hand in they are going to be fed, especially if you haven't washed yours hands right before, and make sure you do after. i feed my snakes in a large plastic tote. sometimes they like the cover on it so they have more "privacy" they like to eat in a quiet area and darker. after they are done eating wait at least 20 minutes before taking him out. and if you can use tongs to feed him so he doesn't associate your hand with food. about getting your mom to except the snake. to be honest with you, i don't like seeing snakes in the wild. you never know how they will react with you. i met a garden snake outside last summer and it hissed at me viciously. all the snakes i have now have never bitten me. and 3 of them never got handled till i got them. i just use alot of precautions. so the easiest way to convince her is to have the clerk or who ever you are buying the snake from to take it out of the cage for you to see how it reacts with people. if you are comfortable with petting it then hold it. while at the place of purchase have your mom pet it while the clerk is holding it. if you have too each time you go to the pet store have them take out a snake for her to get used to them and she will see they are more harmless as pets then in the wild. she needs to empty her mind of all the negative things she has heard or seen about snakes. and about the bedding issue, there is a very absorbent litter for caged animals. it is reptile safe. it is like "ground jeans" a cotton soft material. and is used for bedding for snakes, very easy on their skin. i will be using it with the reptile approved tiny shaved bedding. i know of some people who use reptile sands. try to remember not to introduce things from outside your house, for it can give your snake an illness or parasites. also make sure they an area where they can go into that is private. they wont stay in it all the time. in fact mine wont go into their huts for long at all, because i interact with them often. i also log every thing, feedings, bowls, sheds, behavior just so if anything starts happening you can pin point the start of it easier. and if you have more then one snake per home, try to draw a diagram of special markings on them so you can remember which on s which or take pictures of the markings and put them in the data sheets. i am not a specialist, but these are things i have found that work for me. i will pass any information on that i find helpful. sorry for it being so long. and sorry for the small lettering, i have bad arthritic problems. </p>

I think it is great you are getting your corn snake Alex, if you g...

<p>I think it is great you are getting your corn snake Alex, if you get one at a very young age please make sure the humidity is real good. the best way to do that is; a heat mat at one end of the tank, a thermometer at the same end, a heat lamp, and a thermostat.plug your mat and the heat lamp into the thermostat (with thermostat all the way up. and when your thermometer reaches 87ish shut the thermostat down enough for the heat lamp to go out. when the tank starts cooling down the thermostat will come back on and shut off when the tank reaches the proper degree. to save electricity (which your parents will be happy about, keep the tank cover with a towel except where the heat lamp is. you will also find that will help with the humidity staying in the tank.
I can not say what heat mat is better. it is personal preference. you don't need an expensive one, especially if you do a heat lamp too. just remember to leave the heat in one end and the other end left for a cool down area. please make sure they is always water in the tank. fill the dish up and leave enough room in the dish so when the snake goes into the water dish its body weight doesn't over flow the dish into the tank. my snakes will soak themselves in the water.
I will share a very sad story. i lost a very fragile snake tonight. he didn't look dehydrated, i had just fed him 6 days ago, when i took him out to play he was not moving in any manner. I thought he was in a hibernation state and thought he would wake up when i picked him up. I found that he had a discoloration on his under side which meant he had an illness. it could have been the food I fed him or just that he was not healthy from the beginning. I will be replacing him.)
the best dishes i have found for my snakes, go to the dog section of the pet store, walmart where ever, look for the granite/marble colored dishes. they are heavy plastic, rather shallow and wide. get one the will fit in the tank rather good, get it a little larger than the snake (8-10 diameter) so it will last a while and you wont have to replace it right away. place it close to the hating lamp, but not directly under it for you dont want to cook your snake.
from experience again. i have one snake that just sheds all the time. (ball python) the last couple weeks he hasn't eaten, he started dehydrating on me so i cut down a milk jug put warm water in it and left him in it over night inside his tank so he could get out when he wanted. it seems to have worked so far. his shed has come off and he should be eating soon.
my 100%het albino redtailed boa, refused to eat for me the other night and she was not in a shed, so i placed her in a 30 gal tote with holes in the top , I also placed 2 mice with her, left her over night and the mice were gone and she was very happy and ready to spend time with me.(she wanted quiet from the kids i have and the other animals were too bouncy and loud) so remember when you go to feed the snake it is in a quiet area.

the bowls of a snake in general (all snakes) ,
my boa went nearly 3 months before having a bowl movement, you are thinking that is a long time, i thought the same thing too. i called a friend to ask it was normal. they said it is possible for a snake to go that long before seeing anything. but not common. you have to remember that they grow on a rapid speed when they are healthy, and use every ounce of energy from their food. so it is possible not to see alot of bowl. yes it can smell, all bowls do have an odor, bu the odors very from each critter. snakes, very low odor, it consist of mostly hair and bones. i say bones, i use that loosely, the color can be white or bone colored. the bones of the food is broken down so you wont actually see bones, just signs of them. but you can tell which is the fur. fur doesn't break down. I hope this helps some

ok some of you may be wondering, how can I afford a larger home fo...

<p>ok some of you may be wondering, how can I afford a larger home for my snake????? try this......
pick a 30 gal tote or larger, shape up to you. preferably clear, with a lock down cover. cut a large enough space for the heat lamp to have a minimum a 3'' (inch) diameter around it. use a cool burning bulb for the heating lamp. the screening you use should be cut squared. at one end of the lid. I recommend something stronger than screen door screening. try a small holed (square)mesh hard ware clothe. found at most hard ware stores. hot glue it to the lid on the outside( so the snake doesn't rub p against it and cut himself.) then for extra measure drill a few small holes through large enough to put short bolts through with washers and nuts. make sure the bolts are smooth round ones because the head of them need to be on the inside while the nuts are on the outside.(preferably locking nuts) set up the tote the same way you would the tank. but make sure you keep an eye on the heat that it doesn't start melting the plastic. if done right there should be no problem. to assure the tote doesn't get to hot from the heating pad you you can adhere the pad to a piece of Plexiglas then place it under the tote.
another idea....
for those that are able to work with wood. put together a box size and design of your choice. instead of the top of the box being open the front panel will be open. take a sheet of Plexiglass cut to size or have it cut to size. there are two ways of attaching it. one hinges on bottom so it flips down when opening. or route out the slit in the front of the sides and bottom parts of the habitat so the plexiglass slide up and down in the slits smoothly, but tight enough that the snakes doesn't push on it and knock it out. remember to put a lock of some sort on it too.
the heat lamp can have a custom fit and be placed in , once again recommend a 1/4 or 1/2 inch mesh for the light to be set on. line the box floor and sides with a no glue flooring. you have to cement the flooring on the sides. best to use a liquid nail glue, so it will bond to both wood and flooring. the floor doesn't need to be glue, you may want to change it down the road. ( you are probably asking why a no glue flooring when you are going to glue it anyways. answer the glue down has paper backing it is not a solid vinyl , and will not with stand the type of cleaning you will be doing. the no glue is very flexible wont crack when placing it in and is very forgiving when it comes to cleaning. when using the liquid nails wait at least 24 hours before placing the snake in its new home. you want most of the fumes and smell to be gone. you can make the habitat as fancy as you want, remember the snakes like to have a climbing area, so if you are making it from scratch, built it a little taller.
when cleaning your tank you are better to use a reptile cleaner then you have no fears of problems. if you have a little time, you can try using the sanitary wipes found in the cleaning isle, if you do use them make sure before you put the snake back in that the habitat is completely dry and has no odor left in it.

hope this is helpful too.

<p>It is best that you let a professional rep vet check the gender of your snake. it would have to be probed. people will tell you it has to do with color or markings, but that really doesn't hold true. best way is to ask your local reptile vet. or take it to a pet store that sells snakes. there is a chance that someone that works there can tell you.most releasable bet is the vet.

new snakes can be picky. if it was being fed live mice and your trying to feed frozen(but thawed) it may not be happy. i personally don't feed live because the mouse can bite the snake and you can have more problems. but not always it is personal choice. as i have mentioned before feed your snake in a plastic tote. so they know they are being fed and not just handled. you wouldn't like it if you were to put your hand in the habitat and have it strike you. now if it has been fed live and you dont want to continue feeding live it can be changed. thaw the mouse so when you pick it up you can feel it has some heat to it. not burning hot but body temp warm. you want to have it thawed all the way through. put your snake in the plastic tub and if it doesnt get interested in the mouse just by you moving it with the long thongs(tweezers) then just leave it in the bottom and place the cover on it and leave it over night. make sure you weight done the cover. and put a couple knife holes in it so there is air circulation. over night the snake if really hungry would have eaten the mouse. now if you notice that the eyes of the snake are getting cloudy dont be alarmed, the rest of the snake will have the same cloudiness to it and it will shed. a snake will not eat durn a shed, not any stage of it, so be ready to feed the snake when the shed comes off. hopefully the shed will come off in one piece. if not read back over my notes and see what you can do to help your new friend. hope this has helped some. it is important to keep up with the relationship of your snake. if you dont pick it up on a regular basis accept to feed it, it wont be happy and will pick up a striking habit. they love to have contact with people. </p>

<p>If you are gonna buy a snake i suggest you go to emerald exotics in whitney because the people are nice, a wide range of reptiles including crocodiles and venomous snakes and the prices are quite cheep. i think its brilliant and am going to buy a baby corn snake from there.</p>

<p>I have had a baby corn snake for 9 months. I got her a month after she was born. One benefit to getting them so young is that you know they are healthy and have not been abused, and it is just so awesome to watch her grow. I measure or weigh her every couple onths and get excited over inches and silly things. Just recently i have noticed that her tongue is longer and more split at the end. I had a quick question for anybody who has a snake or knows corn snakes, i swear i saw her yawn the other day. She opened her mouth really wide and stuck her tongue realy far. And then laid back down. I had fed her a mouse a few days before, so i am curious if it was the mouse or a yawn. I was like a foot away watching her, and she hadn't swallowed any substrate or anything. ALSO we have moved from pinkies to fuzzies (mice size). She swallows them pretty quick, and she is still young, how do i know when to move on the next size of mouse and if i am under/over feeding her?</p>

<p>To the guy with the yawning snake; yes, snakes do yawn from time to time. I had a ball python yawn while i was holding him once. He also streached and recoilded on my lap, but it took me a few minutes before I was breathing normally afterward. Only feed a snake mice that are the same size of its body. As long as it seems happy it should be fine. A hungry snake gets nippy and begins hunting about in the pen.</p>
