tortoised shoul dnever be kept in a viv, they should be kept on sand/soil mix and or hemcore bedding they should not be fed fruit and should eat 99% weeds (ones that are suitable) and dandilions are great for torts esp hermanns etc PLEASE SEE the Tortoise Trust Website if you are wanting to buy a tort they will tell you ALL you need to know

I've had my two female Mediterranean Spur-thighed tortoises for well over 45 years. They get on very well together and one has been laying eggs (infertile) for the last 4 years. They can be fertilised years before they start to lay. So I assume that she was fertilised in her homeland before she was imported. Each year she lays less eggs, the first time there were 15. Last year only 6. I estimate that they must both be at least 75 years old.

To jenny, who has been asking whether it is okay to just feed mealworms to leopard geckos.. I have not yet bought a leopard gecko but am planning on it very soon so i've been researching. I have been to loads of websites and every one says that its okay to feed it mealworms. If you want to treat your leopard then give it waxworms or crickets every now and then. crickets allow it to get more excercise but the ones that havent been eaten have to be removed from the cage as they may nibble the gecko (and various other reasons) so mealworms are easy as they can be left in the cage/tank or whatever and c=will stay in the tub.. i hope that was good information and just search leopard gecko care sheet on google for more info

I am appaled by your video on how to look after your tortoise. While excellent in many ways it fails to mention several important points. One, if UV is left on for that length of time there will be considerable shell damage - that is an absurd amount of time to recommend. Secondly - what do you mean 'may have difficulty turning over', MAY, then cannot and would eventually die. Also the certificate is not for all types of tortoises, it is perfectly legal to obtain a horsfield without certificate. Finally I should point out that male and female can be kept together as can males. Perhaps for correct advice you should contact the International Tortoise Association.

The three substrates you have recommended are wrong alfalfa pellets provide to much protein.The tortoise will not be able to dig down if you use Newspaper/papertowels as your substrate.You can use substrates such as aspen,hempcore and a 70/30 mix of soil and playsand. Also a vivarium is not suitable housing for a tortoise as it provides poor air circulation. They can be kept in a tortoise table or an indoor rabbit cage. And it is reccomended you have an outdoor for the summertime when they can get uv rays naturally. For more information you should visit www.TortoiseTrust.org or www.shelledwarriors.co.uk.

Some good point, however Some poor advice here regarding housing. Tortoises should NEVER be kept in a vivarium - funny how pet shops (who sell vivs) purport this. Tortoise tables are a far more natural and healthy way to keep a tortoise, and a great deal cheaper!! Go to the Tortoise Trust website for the best care info out there.

my two year old has stopped eatting and just goes back to bed every time we get her up, the pet shop sold me some dry stuff that you leave to soak in water in one end of her tank and there is sany stuff at the other. i feed her dandylion leaves and other fruit and veg which she loved when i first got her, but as i say she has stopped eatting altoghter at the mo, do you think she is ok?? the temp in there is about 90 degrees.

The best substrate to us is soil and play sand mixed together and deep enough so they can dig if they want to, i use a tort table a night that is in my shed so they are safe and during the day i have a green house which they can walk in and out of when they want, don't give them to much fruit and only dark greens and some wild plant and flowers are good for them you can look on the net for what wild plants they like of grow your own,tortoises should live as natural as possible how would you when your grown to be put in a large viewing box,don't use news paper cos of the ink don't use wood chippings,yes they need uv and a heat lamp but do it as natual as possible if you can pay £150,00 for a tort don't go and be tight on what they live in and your have them for years like me X HOPE YOU FIND THIS USEFUL

Torts love to have a warm bath, you don' need the water deep just enough so they can dip there heads under and just pour it over there shells they love it and they are absorbing the water as well, do it once or twice a week they will also clear there bowl out at the same time mine love it in the summer when i get the hose out ant i'm watering the garden they take a shower at the same time

Vivriums are really bad for tortoises because there is not enough ventilation and tortoises don't really understand glass so they can get stressed. The vivarium in the video would be good for a baby tortoise but I would prefer would at the bottom rather than glass! Remember this video is for babies and tortoises do grow! I have never heard of tortoises in an incubator type box unless they are eggs! But your tortoise does need a sorce of heat and UV. (Not a heat mat) To help care for your tortoise think about perhaps joing a tortoise forum or finding local breeders in your area to ask them any questions. I hope I helped

I can't believe the amount of people that are being told to put their tortoises in tanks! This gives them runny nose syndrome for a start because of the humidity. Naturally they are not meant to be put in a tank, its' like putting a bird in a cage or putting ourselves in a wooden box! They should have a box made from wood adequate for their size accompanied by a heat lamp & viv lighting and a shallow water pool. So many tortosies die because of recieving incorrect care so before thinking about purchasing a tortoise do your research so that you are prepared for the care a tortoise needs to live a happy and comfortable life!

hi regards to the 2yr old not eatin my tortoise is 3yr & has'nt eatin for nearly 2wks been to vets & they kept in for a few days for tests, they say theirs a few reasons why he not eating 1,he's horney & looking for a mate 2nd they took blood & he has liver problems which he's had from birth but got worse as got older & lastly he's depressed my advise to you is go see a good vet that specialis in reptiles & tortoise good luck.
