One:
Snakes eyes are sensitive to UV light and it can damage them.
Two:
The Vivarium was the wrong size.
Three:
You pulled that poor corn out of the Vivarium pretty roughly
Four: You fed the Corn on SUBSTRATE.
Five: There was a piece of substrate stuck to that mouse.

you have to feed the snake out of the tank. this is so the snak doesn't think it is beaing fed every time you try to hold it also so it doesn't eat the substrate, which should not be sand or ceader. also the light(night time basking light not UVB)and heat source should not be in the tank(unless wooden)and under substrate to prevent burns to the animal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

some good points and an imformative vid, but if you look at the snake eating, you can see it swallow sevral peices of aspen.

corns snakes do not need UVB lighting, and it has been proven to damage the eyes. although 2 is low, it is not necassary, and why risk it?

the heat mat is the wrong size for the enclousure, and should be insulated from the snake to avoid burns.

also the vivarium should be escape proof, not with a 3 inch strip at the back, as a gaping escape route.

the vivarium was the wrong size for the snake, and a snake can get stressed if place in a overly large enviroment.

the humid hide should be offered whenever shedding, not just when problems occur.

bottled water is not necassary, tap water is sufficiant, and for those of us who are paranod, it can be left to stand in a sealed bottle over night, as a over-the-top precaution.

As a corn snake keeper myself I have to agree with the other commentators in that you should NOT feed your snake on aspen shavings or any other loose substrate that can stick to the mouse. If you must feed it in the cage let it eat over a plastic lid or ceramic tile. Observe your snake so it doesn't drag the mouse into the shavings.
Another point you should mention is how to feed young snakes - when to move up in mouse sizes and how to tease a shy snake into eating.

As a baby corn snakes can get all there nutrients from there prey, but as they grown they need vitamin d3 which they get by sunbathing. This is why a uv light is recommended. And to the person who's snake isn't eating, have you tried braining or cutting the mouse in half? Failing that, try hitting your snake gently with the mouse, he mayy lash out in frustration then keep eating. If you need any more help, go to http://cornsnakeforum.proboards59.com/index.cgi

Please, Please, Please. If you are getting a cornsnake for the fi...

Please, Please, Please. If you are getting a cornsnake for the first time, DO NOT follow the instructions on this video. There are dangerous mistakes all the way through. My friend runs a reptile rescue and the amout of blind snakes out there through people using UV light is unbelievable. cornsnakes do not actually require unnatural light, if you really must use a light, use a red bulb at night, this provides them with a natural night time basking spot and red light does not register with the snake so does not cause damage to the eyes. NEVER use pine, cedar or sand as a substrate. Dusty substrates cause respitory problems and pine shavings are toxic. Also, a snake should never under any circumstances be allowed to eat any substrate as it can damage the digestion system and actully cause death if it gets infected. Please make sure heat sourses are covered so that the snakes do not get burnt and make sure there is no way to escape as they are escape artists and you will not believe what they can get out of. Please do not use a vivarium that is too large for the size of your snake as this can cause stress and stress can cause them to regurgitate food which also can lead to health problems. It is better to start with a small viv when the snake is a baby and gradually get bigger vivs as the snake grows. This video should honestly be called "How NOT to care for cornsnakes". Follow the advice of another member earlier and visit the cornsnake forums, you will find all the information you need there, that is acurate and it is well worth researching beforedamaging a beautiful docile creature.

Wow you are all dumb (well atleast the ones that say UV lighting leads to blindness). How the heck is the snake supposed to have a natural photoperiod when there is no lighting? They wont go blind from UV lighting, but its not required either. As for feeding on loose substrate, I can semi-agree. What do you think the corns of the wild feed on? Yes, it can and HAS lead to impaction and/or death, but you should have a solid surface such as a rock or something to feed them on. If your feeder is wet there is a risk of substrate getting stuck to it, but a dry feeder, thawed in a plastic bag in hot water, shouldnt pick up any (yes, sometimes it will, but not often). Snakes are smart, they will know what is and isnt substrate if its a chunk.

This video is silly. I have kept Corn Snakes, Pythons, Boa's, and assorted other reptiles for years, and there are a few useless facts in this video;

1./ Snakes do not require U.V. lighting.

2./ You do not need bottled water. Tap water is fine.

3./ You should not use sawdust as a substrate (bedding). They can ingest this while feeding, which is bad for them. Snakes are also prone to respiratory problems, and sawdust can irritate their systems. Use loose woodchip bark, or cob corn husks.

4./ You should not be keeping the heat source actually inside the tank with the snake. It should be attached to the outside.

5./ Snakes are NOT smart. They do not know what is good for them, and what is not. Especially Corn Snakes, who are prone to overfeeding, and impaction due to loose substrate.

Hope this clears it up for anyone thinking of buying a snake in the near future.

Oh, I almost forgot, there is an MSN Group, 'Pet Snakes', based in the U.K., with many members from all over the world. That is a good place to get information on caring for all types of snakes.

the video wasnt that bad what is everyone moaning about? fair enough UV is not needed but scientists still havnt proven whether UV has any effect on snakes. the women on the video said wood shavings NOT sawdust... if you look closely she is using aspen shavings and thats fine however you should not feed on aspen because it could cause the snake to become compacted if it digests the aspen with the mouse....oh and someone said you cant keep the heat source inside the viv??..pff of course you can. if its a heatmat it will need to be covered with something like ceramic tile or if its any of the bulbs on the market then they need to be covered by a guard. if you have a wooden viv putting a heatmat on the outside would be a complete waste of time as the wood does not conduct the heat leaving the poor snake too cold!!!....check out reptileforumsUK for good advice ;)

Just finished watching both videos, some tips were excluded. It's wise to remove your corn snake from the tank for feeding because it can injest some of the substrate which may prove to be harmful later on. Try putting it in a temporary container, but remember to be gentle upon returning it to its original habitat as it may become irritated or stressed and regurgitate its food...This is true with handling, as the video mentioned. But handling should be avoided due to food regurgitation, not because the snake prefers to be left alone after feeding. Food regurgitation can also result from stress, which may spawn from an oversized tank. Be sure to adequetly fit the snake to its home, as snake vomit is no walk in the park for your snake or you.

Bottled water is pointless. In the wild, corn snakes feed on water packed with sediments, so tap water will be just fine. Unless you prefer it, you do not need to provide the snake with bottled water.

UV bulbs are unnecessary. Corn snakes do not require UV exposure; infact, it will do more harm to the snake than good, vision-wise.

If your snake strikes at you repeatedly when handling it, you should wear work gloves until the snake is content with you. Handle it often (unless it has been fed) to speed up domestication.

If you're having problems keeping the teperature right, try moving the habitat to a room that reflects your dilemma (i.e.: cooler room for hotter tank, and vice-versa). Also try darkening the room or cutting of the heat source for a little bit. Just remember to cut it back on when the desired temperature is achieved.

I think this clip has been dumbed down, check out mark amey's actual site for care sheets. Treat it as gospel the guy knows what he's talking about he does loads of behind the scenes stuff for movies and animal documentries. I think its ameyzoo.co.uk however it hasn't been updated in ages so is a bit behind the times so i recommend giving him a ring or visiting his store.

i enjoyed watching the video but it didnt help much. a lot of details are opposite of what all the snake specialists have told me . heat should be a pad under the tank, mist the tank every other day for needed moisture(too much moisture and mold will grow),change entire "bedding"once every 4-6 weeks ,spot clean every day,i too was told they do not need a light.

MARK AMEY SAYS Dear Viewers We have consulted Mark Amey to clear u...

MARK AMEY SAYS Dear Viewers We have consulted Mark Amey to clear up some of the issues raised in the films and the feedback below. Mark says: -HEATING If you want to heat your snakes with a pad under the tank, then you need to use a thermostat. If you heat from the side, the heat diffuses through the tank environment more successfully, and a thermostat is unnecessary. - MISTING WITH WATER You only need to spray with water mist if the tank is absolutely bone dry. The snakes natural habitat is often very dry, and you should be trying to recreate that environment in the tank. Daily misting is usually unnecessary. - UV LIGHTS Adding a UV light will help mimic the natural environment- where there is a lot of sunshine. If you don't have a light, you aren;t mimicking the type of environment the snake would live in naturally. - MOSS, A CLARIFICATION Moss is appropriate at shedding time, but ONLY then. If you leave it it when the snake is not shedding it's skin, it will potentially cause belly sores. Hope these help, please ask more questions, and Mark will answer them. For care sheets, please see. www.ameyzoo.co.uk. Regards, James at Videojug

Many times when someone takes there exotic pet to see the vet they call Mark Amey for advice! Anyone who thinks he is incorrect should go and have a chat with him...you will soon realize its you that’s in the wrong!

Hi, I'm a new snake owner and I'm a little nervous right now because I've handled snakes in the wild with no problem. I have a Corn/Rat snake not even a year old ina 10 gal tank. I think t ay be stressed and every time I go into take it out, sometimes it curves its head and neck kinda like an "s" and I know mainly from BIG snakes that mainly means strike mode, but all the time? I know they can smell fear, but are there any tips that can help me get over this, it has to feel a little vulnerable. But how can I help my snake get to know that I won't hurt it?

heya, no, the snake may have bitten in a mistake for food, it would not have been an attack, but maybe a diffence. sometimes if you catch the snake by suprise, if your hands are moving above the snakes head, or if you handle it a bit too roughly, the snake may bite and withdraw. just dab some antiseptic around the bite, my bites have swollen a tiny amount, but they have no poisons or anything! the snake is unlikely to do it again, its rare that they do, but should not be taken to heart when it happens! its always our own fault, but yeh, it happens, but aslong as your sons not afraid of the snake.. itl be ok!

oh, and yes, i would increase its food size, usually by 2 yrs, the snake would be around 3 ft long? and a good rule is 1.5 times the snakes widest part. so, i would have thought a small adult mouse would be fine. if the snake regergiates it, its too big a prey, but i doubt it will. if your unsure, measure the length of the snake (probably best to use the shedded skin to measure that) and wrap measure around the thickest part. when you next go to buy mice, tell the pet shop guy the sizes, and theyl help out! if you order them online, just get a few small adult mice, and your snake should cope fine! good luck!
