Please revise this video. It gives incorrect and potentially dangerous information.

1. Ferrets should NEVER be kept in wood shavings or hay. They prefer soft blankets as bedding, and can be trained to use a litter box. Wood shavings cause respiratory problems in ferrets.

2. Ferrets should NEVER be given fruits and veggies. They are obligate carnivores, meaning they need only meat in thier diets. Because of thier lack of ability to process fibre, fruits and veggies can cause fatal blockages.

You really need to revise this video. It gives incorrect information on the care of ferrets. 1)ferrets should NOT be kept on woodchips or wood shavings its bad for their health and can cause breathing problems. 2)ferrets need more than a handful of food a day 3)ferrets should NEVER be feed fruits and vegs they are carnivores they should only be feed meat, and high quality ferret food.

There are several problems with the information provided in this video. Wood shavings cause respiratory problems in ferrets. Ferrets have a very short digestive tract and must eat aprox. every 4 hours, not a handul once a day, and should have high quality food always available, even if you prefer feeding a raw diet, it's good to have kibble available. They are strict carnivors. ANY other foods can cause fatal blockages, or in the case of sugar, even fruit is harmful, and can cause insuloma. Ferrets can and do live outdoors and do very well, as long as the temperature never reaches above 80 degrees, with cooler climates preferable. Ferrets aren't for everyone. They can be very expensive and not just food or housing, but also in vet bills for yearly immunizations and surgeries as they age. For the right owner, they are a daily joy, but I urge you to do all the research you can before getting a ferret.

Hi there, thank you for all your comments on this video. As a result of all your comments, we have re-checked the advice given in our film, and are confident that while ferrets are carnivores, it is absolutely fine to give them small pieces of fruit and vegetables as a treat. We have also checked about the wood shaving issue. In very rare cases there are some ferrets that can be allergic to wood shavings, but in general there is absolutely no problem in putting wood shavings in the ferret’s cage. Thousands of people use shavings, with no ill effect. Overall, we are confident about the advice in our video and stand by it, but please feel free to continue to leave advice for people who may be thinking of getting a pet ferret. Thanks, VideoJug.

The video's titer is not the best. I think your last post want to provide a lot of comments from ferret lovers because that seems a little as a provocation.I agree with all points mentionned in the other posts and will not repeat them. Here in Canada, and in the USA we care of our fuzzies not in the same way as it is showing in this video. Our fuzzies get sick near 5 years old, and we are so lucky when they can live 8 years. There are a lot diseases as adrenal, insulinoma and we are so carefully with their food, and all their environment. The veterinary is very expensive, and we need a special budget for our furkids. In US and Canada our fuzzies are not ordinary pets, for the most of us they are a total member of our family. They are not a toy, or something for to have pleasure with. They are too much intelligent and their hearts are too big and they have all a great soul.If you want to have great links about care, chart food, deseases, it will be a pleasure for me to give you the links.

As a LONG time ferret owner, I will echo the comments already left. Using wood products as bedding is 100% wrong. Some woods are better than others, but in general, what you buy in a pet shop is horribly inappropriate for ferrets, as are most fruits and many veggies due to excess fiber and sugars.

Please remove this video, as it is terribly misleading.

This video gives good advice into hadleing and cleaning, however i doubt that whoever made this video ha seriously researched ferrets or is an expert on the subject as putting hay and wood shavings in their hutch is very bad for them and i seriously think this video should be pulled as its giving VERY bad advice. If you want to know how to look after ferrets properly ask a ferret breeder, they are experts on ferrets and will be able to answer all your questions. Ferrets cannot just be put in a cage with an animal of the same sex as they have a complex menstrual cycle and require mating around twice a year otherwise infection sets in, make sre they are spayed.

I am a zoologist and have kept ferrets for many years. I allow my house trained ferrets the run of the house and agree that dusty wood shavings are likely to cause problems with a ferret's eyes and nose. It also omits very important advice about breeding ferrets and the need for spaying females. This video is full of very wrong ideas about how to keep ferrets.

I was told that wood shaving is very bad for ferrets as a bedding material. It's bad for their breathing and they can ingest it with food. So careful about what you use.

I agree with Anonymous. This video is so upsetting. It just reinforces many of the misconceptions about Ferrets. That's why so many Ferrets get kept in poor conditions, mkistreated so badly and their needs not taken care of. FERRETS ARE NOT CAGE PETS! They should be free-roam just as a cat or dog would. They love being taken walks. A cage regardless of size ONLY serves to cut them off from socialisinga nd natural behaviour. To Persephoneo who said the ferrets look happy-you shouldn't be keeping ferrets as you've obvioyusly little regard for them and little or no knowledge about them. I agree take the video off the site. I've kept Ferrets 15 years and I advocate free-roam i.e they have free run of the house and garden. caging them is looking after YOUR needs NOT theirs.

At the stables I ride at-we have a ferret, she is well cared for and everyday she has a while playing in a unused stable with us girls that help out. It was caught in the stables as it had been hiding under a shed. It is indeed a ferret that escaped from a nearby farm - we adopted it as a stable pet and it is healthy and friendly. We use saw dust and straw as beding but now that I have read these posts I will tell them to change it.

I have one ferret who was given to me--he is the best pet I have ever had.--very friendly and has always been by hismself.--We have him in a 5t by 3 ft cage in our living room where he has the opportunity to hear and see everything going on. He and I have a special time in the evening and in the mor ing where I take him out and groom, pet and love on. This usually last about an hour. He also likes to be placed in a "Ferret ball without the top on it, but enjoys having his little mouse "baby" who is furry,--and wants me to have my hand in the ball. his personality shines greatly while he is awake.--in his large cage he has four lvels to climb and a level on the second floor forhis food and water bottle. We also have a litter box in the bottomof hte cage--yes, he is litter-box trained. He also climbs tot he second level as I clean out his lttter box and pouts as he watches me claen out his box because he wants to play and not wait until I finish. He is a very major part of our family as well as our cat and three dogs-but he is not allowed ot get down and crawl on the floor without his ferret-ball to roll aroudn in. There is too much for him to hurt himself in.

I've had ferrets for years now. They live outside all year round. I use shavings on the floor/in the litter tray but u need straw/ hay/shredded paper/clothes as bedding. Most shavings that u get in pet shops will say that it has had any dust extracted so i see no problem with it...
I've also been told that when holding a ferret u have to support its rear end unless it is for a very short time.
Thats my views, take it or leave it.

I have NEVER heard of raising ferrets to sleep and poop in the same bedding. All of my ferrets pooped in litter boxes (filled with ferret-friendly litter-Their lungs are extremely sensitive) and slept in fleece hammocks, which hung from the tops of their cages! After they became adults, they never had accidents outside the litter box, as they enjoy having a clean cage to play in. They are much more intelligent and trainable than this video suggests! It would be very sad if someone took this information literally and kept a ferret in this manner.

my ferret is kept in a hefty 3 story wire cage, it is much more suitable than the wodden hutches shown in the film as ferret waste can be cleaned up properly in a wire cage and when the ferret uses the loo it falls thru to the tray at the bottom so he never comes into contact wiv it. with the wooden hutches the urine tends to soak into the wood which is unpleasant for owner and especially ferret!, as this will smell and could cause him illness! ferrets must always be held wiith there bottoms supported as there spines are very long and it is dangerouse to put too much pull or presure on them. my ferrets favorite treat in tinned oily fish in tom sause, oilly fish is good 4 there coats eyes and immune system, i highly recomend it. it is a very healthy way to show how much u love your little pet!

I have only one ferret (one died recently), and they make lovely pets. We let her run freely in the house as they tend to poo in one or two areas in the house so we put down trays for her. She also sleeps at the bottom of our bed now, I guess she is lonely :(

For goodness sake the video is a guideline, the cage in the video migh have a seperate sleeping area such as the ones people keep rabbits in. Ferrets can be held like the video shows it relaxes the ferret although for long periods of time u should support the bottom half. Ferrets can be caged indoors or out as long as it is big enough and you regularly let your ferret out for exercise and play. I keep my ferret in its cage while im at work so it cannot wreck my flat or injure itself. My ferret is healthy and happy, and good quality sawdust is fine to use as long as the dust has been removed, check the packaging if worried use a different material. Also females are the only ones in danger if not neutered or mated, they fall victim to a hormone imbalance that causes them to become anaemic and subsequently die.

I think the people who bad mouth the video are giving stupid advise. Raw food diet is still probably the best diet that you could give your ferret. However, it is not always possible to feed a full raw meat diet of just rabbit, small rodents, and birds.
It is wise to give your ferret a little fruit and veg now and again eg bananas, grapes, lettuce. BECAUSE WHAT DO YOU THINK THE RABBIT HAS IN ITS INTESTINES WHEN THE WILD FERRET EATS IT?!!! YES HERBAGE AND VEG MATERIAL!! COME ON PEOPLE THINK!

my ferret loves to be dangled when i hold him! he always has a silly grin on his face. i was always told that it is ok to hold a ferret like this unless it is a pregnant female (or just slightly overweight!). it does not cause him any discomfort he's nearly six now and doin just fine. i agree that the film has problems but surely anyone thinking of getting a ferret is gonna do their reserch a bit more thouroughly than just watch a short vague film? peace. x

This is 4 the person that asked if u need 2 give ur ferrets injections. Yes u do! All ferrets need 2 have yearly injections from the vet 4 all kinds of things. Also when ur hob (male ferret) is young it's wise 2 get it nutered so it doesn't smell as bad. This is wise but opishonal unlike with the jill (female ferret). when ur jill comes into season it needs 2 b mated or 2 b given a jill jab 2 take it out of season or else she will die! another opishion and the 1 i think is best is getting ur jill spayed when it's young and then she will never come into season again.

This is a great video. I have studied ferret owning for years and own 3 myself, and have only noted two flaws in the video. It's best to give them more food or they won't become well fed. Also, don't use a thick layer of woodshavings because the ferret will inhale the dust and may develop respiratory problems. Everything else is correct though. Well done whoever made this. And everyone who is horrible about it, you're just jealous that you couldn't make one like this.

This advice is bizarre! They are keeping ferrets as if they're guinea pigs! They DON'T need bedding if you give them a LITTER BOX and a BLANKET to sleep in. (A washable blanket absorbs smell better, FYI) They should have a bigger cage with toys and hammocks and food available ALL OF THE TIME. When held like that they CAN"T BREATH- you should support their bottoms. Ferrets need play time OUT of the cage. Cutting toenails is SO EASY if you put a drop of fur suppliment oil on their belly to keep them busy, and just avoid cutting the red vein in their toenail. This video is misinformative- they should REMOVE IT!

I agree with most of the info. But the food and bedding is incorect! Ferrets have high metabolisms and need to eat when they feel hungry! If you dont, their health deteriorates. DONT use shavigns as bedding!!!! It causes respitory problems and illness! I use blankets and old pair of pants for him to sleep in adn a hammock! I am only a cild and I kno much more than this video!

this is to the person that said that ferrets were boring pets because they sleep a lot. yes they sleep a lot but thats mainly at night you will get to play with them a lot because they should be given at least 3 hours out of their cage every day to play and exercise and so if you do go to work during the day then they will be hours afterwards to play with ur ferret. also ferrets a very gud at ajusting their sleeping times and so if u always let them out in the morning, they will ajust their sleeping time so that they will be wide awake and ready to play 4 hours at that time.

I have 2 ferrets and dont use wood shavings, those are horrible- as soon as they pee it makes them smell awful and they are just hideous to clean- also it causes sneezing. I use natural kitty litter with no clay and just scoop there poop out- its the best way to go. As far as anyone interested in getting a ferret please seriously think about it because they are a lot of work but very worth it. They require lots of time spent in order to keep them happy. I adopted both my ferrets from owners that did not want them anymore so please be sure you read up on them before purchasing- this video was very good but the cedar chips was wrong and the wooden cage most people wont have anyways unless keep there ferrets outside. I have a very big metal cage with lots of ramps and hammocks so that is a good way to go. Please if you decide to get a ferret get a fairly large cage dont get the little tiny ones because not fair to the animal and you will be cleaning it 24/7.
