more than you'd think lol, i bought them thinking they'd be a cheap pet in uni, but they grow huge, so a bigger tank is required, I have two in a tank about 20inch by 12inch by 12inch, that with a vivarium lid cost me around £40, but one of tough’s small plastic fish tanks will do at first. If you want them to stay awake in the winter you'll need a heat matt, a thermostat (mine cost me around £55) and a thermometer or they will hibernate through the colder winter months. You can feed them ordinary salad stuff(cucumber, tomatoes, lettuce) as long as your very careful about washing it, it is easy to poison them because of the pesticides used on them. I learnt this the hard way, no one warned me and I was very upset when I lost one of my first snails to pesticide poisoning, so I find the easiest way to avoid this is to feed them organic food, its just much less worry and hassle, though a little more expensive, organic cucumbers are about 99p from Tesco's and my two adult snails will eat about half a cucumber a day. You'll need organic (lots of company’s now put pesticides in to soil) peat free (peat is to acidic and rots there shells) compost for the bottom of there tank, I get mine from my local Wilkinson’s for £1.79 and I clean them out about every two weeks. You’ll need a water sprayer to keep the tank damp, there usually about £1 from Tesco's. A cuttle fish (for calcium) will last bout 2 weeks with adult snails and cost between 25p and 50p The snails you can pay between 50p and £10 per snail, depending on its size. My total cost

Sue, how old are your snails? if theyre above 5 years it might just be them getting old, or if theyre still relatively young you didnt give them a varied enough diet as babies. If they seem otherwise healthy then I wouldnt worry about it. Feed them lots of different food, tomatoes, digestive biscuits, brown bread, cucumber etc and theyll be happy and healthy. Kae x

Great webpage...I have 3 albino reticulata jueveniles and they're doing fine on everyday fruit and veg(well washed!) . I don't have a heat mat because my place is never colder than 65 degrees and they are always keen to climb onto my hand. I really love my snails as they're so peacful and have a graceful movement that I'lll watch for ages. Enjoy your snails, they're another one of those fasinating lifeforms this planet provides. In time you'll love them as much as i do!

They can take aroiund 1- 2years to reach full size. They breed ALOT! Search there tank every other day for eggs, upon finding them; freeze the eggs (keep any you wish to keep)...The common species like these (Fulicas) are hard to get rid of. If snails go into there shell, there too cold and hibernating. This is also so if there is a thin film covering the shell (DO NOT BREAK THIS) The 'white thing' on there 'kneck / head' are there sex organs. You can tell when snails are mating, the 'white thing' on there head will be connected to each other. Hope this helped anyone :)

Does any one know why my snails shell is turning white? Bernard is two years old and up untill about a month ago he had a lovely brown strippy shell. He is fed a varied diet and always has cuttle fish available as his sorce of calcium. He shares his home with seven other snails which are his babies. Could he be lacking is a specific nutrient or mineral?

You can't miss the snail babies because there will be loads of small white eggs in a corner of your tank. They take around 2-3 weeks to hatch and if you have 2 snails together they will breed rapidly. If you have too many snails the easiest way to get rid of the eggs is to put them into a small bag and put them in the freezer over-night. The next morning you can just dispose of them and look after your other snails.

Also land snails can hibernate for up to 2 years. The reason for this is probably because the soil isn't damp enough or its too cold for them. So they probably arn't dead. You can tell if they are hibernating as there would be a thick layer of film over the snail under-neath where the head comes out.

You snail is aveastating. That means it is sort of hibernating. They only do this if there is not enough moisture or sometimes heat. If the place in which you keep it is at room tempurature is is probaly due to lack of moisture so to wake up your snail either put it in a very shallow bath of water or spray it heavily with water. When he wakes up remember to spray the tank every day! Hope I helped.
