I am curious as to how that gecko will manage to crawl up into the humid moss hide (plastic is slippery and leopard geckos can't climb smooth surfaces). A tupperware box with a hole cut in it is very simple to make. Also the video failed to mention other popular food sources for leopard geckos - such as brown crickets, kingworms, mealworms, butterworms etc. Your gecko should be encouraged to eat from a dish so that they don't eat any substrate. Sand of anykind is a risk people should avoid. Geckos under 5 inches should be on paper towel or slate/ceramic tile. Larger geckos can be kept on coconut fibre, tiles and rock. If your female gecko stops eating, she is quite likely to lay eggs in the next few months (Jan-Aug). Check her gently to make sure she does not become eggbound. Contact a vet asap if your gecko becomes eggbound or compacted.

well, for one, no calcium sand. Calcium sand is very harmful when ingested. It states not to use any other kind of sand, but this is as bad as any other. Either use newspaper, reptile carpet, or paper towels as a substrate. You also do not need a uvb bulb, as they do not need uvb. It will not help them grow, or make them healthier. It is just a waste of another $30 you could be spending on food for your leopard gecko, or another accessory. Please update this video with the current information, becuase it is giving people wrong information that can lead to potentially harmful effects to their gecko.

Your video is a horrible misinforming film on how to care for leopard geckos. Cali-sand and loose substrates are ALL deadly to leopard geckos, especially the Calci-sand. Leo's do NOT need uv lights and the bright light can cause them to have eye problems and go blind. They need belly heat, not side or top heat. Also, the shed box featured is IMPOSSIBLE for use with most leopard geckos as it is too high and the hole too small.

This video needs updating! For example if you place the heat mat on the side of the tank it will not work properly, they are designed to heat objects not the air so it needs to be placed idealy under 1" of substrate. It will heat the sand enabling the Gecko to gain the heat it needs to thermoregulate.
It has also failed to mention that Geckos are nocturnal so the need for a UV light is not really needed.

If you are thinking of having a pet Leopard Gecko then can I sujest looking at some of the reptile forums you will gain all the knowledge you require by asking questions.

These videos are a great idea but I think they just need a little updating.

I just got the calcium sand maybe 3 weeks ago. I have 3 leopard geckos and one of them looks like it as to kinda small balls hanging out of it or it kinda looks like its guts is starting to come out. It is moving around and not really acting too much different. Is this from the calcium sand or is this the start of it laying eggs? I don't know what it is or what to do and should i get rid of the sand? Please email me at shannml83@aol.com Thankyou

Like how much is the vet, food, and other nassesities going to cost? If you could post these up for me, that would be a HUGE help.

Leopard geckos do not need sand.. why has VideoJug made a comment on another comment board but not this one.. very fine sand is reccommended for MUCH OLDER GECKOS but juvenile geckos should never go near any sand and paper towels/newspaper is much more appropriate.. mealworms are just as good but are less active so our gecko wont get much excercise from them but feeding them crickets and waxworms now and then is fine. DO NOT FEED THEM WAXWORMS ALL THE TIME. They are too fatty for feeding daily. Any questions email sydney-williams@hotmail.com or go to www.the-grave.piczo.com as i have done alot of research on leopards for when i get my first one

we have been the owners of a Leopard Gecko now for a week. She is 6 months old and were advised by the pet shop to feed her 6 crickets a day.We have done this however in the last 72 hours she seems to have lost her appetite and now she is down to 3 per day. When we put the crickets in at dusk she just looks at them and doesnt re-act.Is this normal behaviour for a young gecko.
Do they eat when they want to and just let the crickets roam around the vivarium

this vid is really incorrect. First of all you should never use sand for a leo especially calci-sand it is the worst type. Second leo's don't need any lights like that if they are in a room such as a bedroom the lighting coming from that is fine. 3'rd the under tank heater(the thing that he stapled to the side) should be put under the tank or substrate becuz unlike most lizards leo's absorb heat through ther bellies so the UTH should be at the bottom in one end of the tank between 85-90 degrees.

I dont see why you shouldnt use sand
because their natural environment is all sand
but calcium sand is bad because they will ingest the sand and get too much calcium
the best sand to get is relly fine play sand because it wont cause them to choke
and if you have fine sand it wont be hard to poo out!

I've used T-rex calcisand, for as long as i've had my leos, and ive never had any health problems. I feed a hatchling 4-6 small crickets every day (the crickets should be no bigger than the geckos head) Juveniles, around 6 inches, 4-6 crickets every other day, and adults 4-6 fully grown crickets 2-3 times a week. Leos do't need UVB lights, and put the heat mat under the tank, not on the side. and for 'shockvalue69' Then can get in, easily, just put some moss/sand inside it so they can get back out. leos do climb, my leos keep on climbing the cactuses and the exo-terra background in my tank.

Leopard geckos don't live in sand in the wild. They live in the rockier arid areas, such as Iraq and Afghanistan as opposed to the sandy deserts in Saudi Arabi. Also, heat strips aren't recommended because they don't heat the air as well as bulbs and can cause burns if they get too hot.

It is good to have them on a schedual for 12 HOUR day and 12 Hour night.. this can be done with a normal house lamp above the tank set on a timer..

Seriously, some people here need to do proper reaserch into getting a leo. You should at least buy 2-3 books and know them back to front before you consider buying one. I am worried that a few people here may be killing there leo without realising it.
Also, I have noticed in this video about how to pick up the leo, BUT, leos hate being picked up and handled, and it just increases the risk of accidents. I just had to pick one of mine up to sex it and nearly droped it cus it decided to run up my arm.
I was for calci-sand, but ive reaserched into it, and discovered it is not 100% digestable, and will neutralise the stomach acid, as calcium is an alkali. (p.s. I was the guy that posted about T-rex calci sand 9 days ago)

calci bird gravel should be fine, so long as the grains are no bigger 3mm in diameter. If you decide to use normal sand, make shure the grain size is even smaller.
You can get hide from your local pet store, or make them out of old sandwich boxes and margerine tubs. Or if you want a more natural looking hide look at www.exo-terra.com click on 'products' at the top, and just look around, theyve got substrate in there too. Then just go to your local pet store and buy it, it should be there.
I am considering changing to a mix of substrates: 1/3 potting soil and 2/3 calci sand.

Can anyone offer advice with regard to our two female leopard geckos who have lived together quite happily for over six years. During the last week one of them has been bitten on her tail twice by the other. We watched her lick the tail and then bite it, drawing blood on both occasions.

id seperate them, until the injured one is recovered. If you do re-unite them, make sure your vivarium is big enough for 2 geckos (say 24 inches X 18) make shure you have several hides, and that each hide is big enough for 2 geckos. and ensure the geckos are about the same size. If the female is still getting beat up, just keep them seperate.
Other than that theres not much else you can do.

i,ve hand fed my leopard gecko since i've had him. i use crickets, worms, locust, etc.
i use a tweezers 2 pick them up dip them in calcium then feed him about 5 a day sometimes every other.
sometimes live food can b 2 fast 4 your gecko so the other way i feed him is 2 put the food in the fridge 4 10mins before feeding cause it slows them down.

I've got a 3 month old leopard gecko. I keep him on slate tiles that you can get at pet stores. With sand in btw the cracks. I keep him in a 10 gallon terrarium. I built an upper level in the terrarium using a small sheet of plywood, with a ramp leading up to it. He has 3 hiding places, I used a section of PVC piping to make one hide. I feed him 2 week old crickets and small mealworms. overall he seems very happy. He's awesome!!

My cousin has a leopard gecko, and I am interested in getting one myself. I have a few questions/problems though..

Do they smell?
How long do crickets/feed live for?

It would be a hassle to get the feed, as my nearest stockist is in Manchester.. taking about a 2 hour round trip from where I live. How frequent would that journey be?

any help would be much appreciated!

This was fine at first, but recently has been falling off of it, falling about 1.5 feet onto rock decor below. Is this okay? he seems unharmed so far, im just worried, incase he hurts himself.

or is he suicidal? =-/

(For the guy bellow about crickets) No, there isn't, ive tryed feeding dead crickets to mine, but they are not attracted to them. They must be live, as a gecko will only stalk and hunt live prey.
(For the guy who just bought one) Yes, it is normal, they just need to settle in and be left alone. Generally though (being nocturnal) they are only active during dusk (or just after the light goes out) or early dawn. Use a red light to watch them after dark, as they cannot see the color red, but they can see ultra-violet light.

they can live off just mealworms, just put the mealworms into a shallow dish so they dont bury into the substrate. Make sure there gut loaded and dusted with calcium first. They must be live though, leos can be conditioned to eat dead food, but its difficult to do, and its rare for a leo to take to it.

SERIOSLY, THEY CAN LIVE OFF ONE OR THE OTHER. Or a mix. whichever you choose. Make sure (for both prey items) that they are: The correct size, no bigger than the head of the gecko; Dusted with calcium; gut loaded. Your gecko will suffer very quickly if these are not done correctly. Feed the leopard gecko during the evening. Feed babies 4-6 crickets/mealworms a day. Feed juveniles (gecko's that are between 6 inches and 10 months old) 4-6 crickets/mealworms every other day. Feed adults 4-6 crickets/mealworms every 3 days, also occasionly offering them a waxworm/giant mealworm/pinkie (baby mouse)/locust. ALL FOOD MUST BE LIVE. Ive had 3 years of leopard gecko experience, and 2 years of reaserch before that. I have had no problems with the food items/ quanitites above. Hope your son enjoys his leopard gecko.

looks like someone dosn't know much about leopard geckos.
Calcium sand?why would you use that?i thought this was supposed to be about care.use a 75/25 dirt sand mix for burrowing as they do in the wild for many reasons.they are not in plain sand in the wild, and should not be on sand especially calci sand in captivity.as for food, crickets, mealworms, and superworms should be fed.not hugge locusts.you dont need a uvb bulb at all, 1 they are nocturnal, and they get their calcium from insects and the dust.heat lights should be used, not heatpads.heatpads will only have belly heat, heatlights will have belly heat(put a peice of slate ir rock under the lihjt and it will absorb heat for proper digestion) and a good ambient air temperature.give them atleast two hides.warm and cool.no moist hide because they will burrow under the dirt/sand mix for all the humidity they need.

ok heres how i care for leopard geckos:
HOUSING
a single leopad gecko can be housed in a 10 gallon tank minumum, 40 gallon maximum can be housed with 2 to 4 geckos. juvenilles can be housed in a 10 gallon.
SUBSTRATE/BEDDING:
I would line the floor with either repti sand or repti carpet/shelf terririum line. Paprer towel is goodbut not natural. A fine grade of playsand is suitable. The only sand substrate that is suitable is playsand or repti sand.
TEMPERATURE:
Day- 85-90 F.
Night- 70-80 F.
Bask- 90
LIGHTING/HEATING:
If you want the geckos to look briht you can get a heat lamp, but just to remember that they ar nocturnal (active at night). You can get a heat pad too because it creates the leopard gecko's belly to heat up.
You can get a thermometer/digital theremometer.
FEEDING:
They can eat mealworms, crickets, superworms for their diet. Wax worms can be fed atleast once a week becuase they are overfat. Pinkies are OK....they can be fed them close to when the female gecko is pregnant.Juvenilles can be fed just crickets and/or mealworms.
HANDLING:
one thing.....DONT GRAB 'EM BY THE TAIL!!!
just gently curl you fngers over the stomach.
BEHAVIOR:
They won't bite unless they are really stressed.
Males fight if they are put in thesame aquarium.

Heres what I do... I have one male gecko.
HOUSING: currently I have a 24 by 18 exo-terra terarium, but im looking to upgrade to a 48 by 24 wooden vivarium.
SUBSTRATE: I use a substrate which is 2 parts natural desrt sand, and 1 part potting soil, without perlite. Looks natural, and I have had no probs with impaction so far.
Heating: The temperature is at 88 in the day provided by a 150W bulb over the terarium, controlled by a thermostat and a timer. and two UVB bulbs, to improve the visual light quality and because ive notice my leo basking in the open during the day. At night I use a 75W black/dark blue bulb, to give a tempurature of 78 degrees.
HIDES: I have two hides, one hot and one cool, both the hides are misted daily, to keep them humidish.
FOOD: I feed mine 3-4 dusted and gut-loaded crickets every 2 days, as he is almost fully grown. He ignores mealworms for some reason. I ensure that the crickets are as big as possible, but not adults. I leave a water bowl in the terarium all the time and clean it daily. I also leave a dish of calcium in the terarium, so that the leo can lick it if he needs to.
MAINTINENCE: remove poo whenever you spot one, clean water dish daily, And I clean the tank whenever I get bored of how it looks, about every 2 months.

For the guy that thinks the gecko laid a bad egg. There are severa...

For the guy that thinks the gecko laid a bad egg. There are several possibilties... erm... 1. one is that she could be suffering from egg binding (where an egg effectivly gets stuck for whatever eason) as geckos mostly only ever lay 2 eggs at a time, its unusual to only lay 1, but your gecko is young so it is possible. You can check for this easily by simply looking at the underside of the gecko for an egg shaped buldge, obviosly, the only way this can be fixed is by taking it to a vet to operate. Or you can remove it yourself by force, but you will probably cause more damage than good. 2. The male could be making unwanted advances onto her, and stressing her out, it mite be worth trying to sepetare them for a few months. 3. The male is eating the majoritory of the food, or intimidating the female from eating, again, you can seperate them for a few months. 4. The female has caught a parrasite, that needs to be treated, eg. coccidia. I'd advise seperating them, incase the male catches it too. If it is coccidia or something similar, then its best to have two terrariums for the female, as she will need to be cleaned out about once a day to eliminate the parasite. If you do seperate them, then maintain the male first (for regular stuff like changing the water and food), to prevent themale getting the parasite. I do doubt that it would be a parasitic infection though, unless you just dont clean them.................................. I'd advise that you seperate them, and place the female in a basic terrarium, with a paper towl as a substrate, and keep an eye on her. And see if she regains weight. Reaserch about different parasites and diseases and stuff, and see if you can identify anything. The best thing to do though will be to take a couple of hours off of work or something, and take her to a vet or a reptile specialist with one of her poos. Hope she gets better.

You MUST put vitamins and minerals on the crickets before feeding them to your gecko, otherwise your gecko will suffer quickly, and wont live for very long. And you should remove as many crickets as you can from the cage afterwards, aas a large amount of crickets in the cage can stress a gecko.................Also, you can feed (other than crikets) mealworms, whcih can be used to replace crickets entirely. But id also advise you fed them silkworms, waxworms, giant mealworms and pinkies once they are fully grown.
