Two points - if keeping rabbits in same sex pairs, it is best to have them neutered to avoid them fighting when they reach puberty (especially males).

Also, it is not a good idea to feed rabbits lettuce as it gives them diarrhoea - much better to give fresh grass, carrots, spring greens, apples, broccoli, etc. Always introduce greenfood gradually and keep an eye out for signs such as diarrhoea. Be particularly wary with young rabbits who may not have been given greenfood before.

Arrrgh. NO NO NO. Diet - 90% hay +grass diet. Not straw. No "mixes". If you feed a "mix" you'll run in to dental problems by the age of four or five and be faced by huge bills. Seriously. (by a vet)

People will be much happier with their pet rabbits if they are house rabbits. Keeping them outside ensures less interaction.

Also, rabbits are very easily litterbox trained. They could be easily kept on a hard surfaced enclosure without bedding or a wire bottom.

Romaine lettuce should be avoided. Dark green leafy veggies are best. Carrots are too high in sugar and should be only an occasional treat.

Unlimited timothy hay is best. Alfalfa hay is OK for the first year, but timothy hay is better. The pellet feed should be timothy-based.

Actually, its best to have ALL rabbits spayed or neutered. Males tend to spray. Females get mean and have a high rate of cancers if not spayed (around 80%)

I have a female house rabbit and she has been spayed. She is litter trained and loves licking people!
I don't think it's nice that rabbits are said that they can be outside. You don't have your dog outside for the night so why your rabbit? My bunny is just like a cat or dog! she is very intelligent and loving =) Thanks for the tips though and it's best to have pellets instead of a mix because they can be so picky and won't get the balanced diet they need.

Great vid but you should have said something about bathing. I love my rabbit but there is no way in hell you can pick him up when he's not in the mood and I've learned to let him come when he's in the mood. What about chocolat? Tip. If you keep one indoors make sure you cover up all your power cords with plastic tubing.

I have a problem, my two neighbours have both had there rabbits killed over the last year or so, we cant work out what it could be, it cant be a dog as the fences are 6 feet high, and the cats dont seem to bother them.
The rabbits had the run of the gardens as they are really secure with no gaps in the fences.
But they were both found in a horrible state, now i am worried as my rabbit loves to be free in her pen, she doesnt like it at all if i put her in her hutch even overnight, but i will be from now on whether she likes it or not.
Can anyone suggest what i can do as i dont want to keep her trapped in the hutch all day as well. She has a very secure pen in the corner of our garden which holds her hutch and toys, it has grass and is decked with a place were she can dig. My washing lines are in that part of the garden, so if it is a bird or a fox do you think by leaving something on the lines say some old towels this may help dissuade preditors?

The diet described was very poor. Most rabbit mixes are completely incorrect for rabbits and encourage skeletal problems, tooth problems, obesity and bladder stones. Pellets are better, hay and other greens, especially grass, should make up the vast bulk of the diet- rabbits were designed to eat grass etc after all!
Rabbits should spend most of the day free range in a secure garden or large run- please remember house rabbits also require outdoor access everyday to ensure proper bone growth and to allow grazing.
And NEVER EVER be picked up solely by the scruff of the neck as demonstrated in the video! The scruff can be used if your other hand is used to support the rabbit under its bottom. Alternatively, put one hand under the rabbits stomach and use your other hand to support its bottom. Rabbits can break their backs if they are not supported properly when picked up as they can kick their strong back legs in mid air leading to breakage of the vertebrae. And remember, especially at this time of year, check your rabbits bottom regularly for "fly srike"- flys may get attracted to a dirty bottom and lay eggs there which develop into maggots, eating the poor bunny alive. This is a problem we see commonly- best wishes, a vet

Do not rely on this source alone as there are a few mistakes such as the diet she listed wasnt the best you could give your rabbit. Please do not pick your Rabbit by the scuff of the neck as it doesnt support the back proply and could break spine or cause back problems. Type rabbit care into google for more information about rabbits. one of the best websites i went on was www.omlet.co.uk.

you should never pick up a rabbit by the scruff of the neck as they can break there spine and you should not hold rabbits as demonstrated in the video. You should hold them to your body to make them feel safe. And it is not really advisable to keep rabbits of the same sex unless they are purchased at the same time and are spayed/neurtured or litter mates

Thanks to the Anonymous Vet from 84 days ago ;-)) who has pointed out some important misconceptions about rabbit care already.

There are a few more points, though, that need to be addressed.

As an experienced rabbit owner (and admin of the German rabbit board http://www.kaninchentreff.de ;) ) I have to add/correct the following points:

1. While it _is_ very important that rabbits should be kept in groups of at least two, it is _by far_ better to put two of OPPOSITE sexes together (Important: The male has to be NEUTERED at least six weeks before letting him join a female, else he can make her pregnant with his "last shot" that is still in him after the operation).
Pairs of same-sex rabbits tend to fight each other, it is _much_ easier and far less stressful for all involved (esp. the rabbits) if there is a male/female configuration.
Also, when you have an existing male/female "group" it is rather easy to integrate a second female, for if the male accepts the newcomer female the first female will accept her more easily, too.

2. Generally _ALL_ rabbits should be neutered, the males because there are already _way_ enough rabbits about who are clogging the animal homes everywhere , making their lives miserable because of a constant lack of "good" homes while others who do have a home very often lead a still worse life as a childrens toy or a piece of furniture, standing around in little cages (and cages in sizes of 1,20 m, which are pretty standard, ARE small if the animal has to live its life in them).

To neuter females is also VERY important for when they reach a certain age (5-6 years, usually) their ovaries quite automatically start to develop carcinomas, just because they are "old enough" for that.
In our private rabbit group (at home) we have a few males and six females, all but one are already neutered and it was worth it!
Four of the five neutered females already had developed huge carcinomas, in one case it was about five times as big as the ovaries themselves!!
Two females sadly have had malignant tumors, for them the neutering came too late, now we can only hope for them... 8/

3. The "picking up" issue has already been addressed by many here, that's a good sign! ;)=)

4. As for feeding rabbits - so-called "rabbit mixes" are actually quite bad for these animals because many of their contents are quite unhealthy for rabbits.
Cereals are _NOT_ - I repeat: NOT a natural food source for rabbits - they ONLY eat cereals when preparing for winter, in order to build up body fat. House rabbits do not need to build up a fat stock because they are being fed by their human "owners" during winter!
Furthermore cereals as well as honey and molasses, which are most of the time contents of rabbit mixes, are straining the rabbits' stomachs because they swell from gases that originate from them. Swollen bowels and/or stomachs are quite deadly for rabbits because then they stop eating. Rabbits only can digest food if there is a constant (!!) supply of new food that "presses" the already eaten food through their intestines.
Another problem is the bowels' bacteria climate - "good" bacteria are dying off because of chemical reactions from the wrong food and "bad" bacteria like Coli are on the rise.

Generally rabbit mixes tends to make rabbits fat pretty quickly _AND_ prevents the abrasion of their front teeth because the "food" it is rather soft.

Anyhow, the video is correct with the remarks about Hay/straw, water and "green food" like salad - actually the ideal rabbit food is an handful of salad/carrot a day and hay/straw all day.

Water should be "served" in low, broad and heavy bowls (so they cannot knock them over ;) ) - there should be special ceramic bowls in your pet store.
Water bottles, as shown in the video, are complicated to use by rabbits while yielding only small amounts of water at a time, while the rabbits can use a much more natural posture while drinking _and_ they get the amount of water they want/need more efficiently. AND those bowls are _way_ more easy to clean and refill! ;))

5. Letting them move and run around as shown in the video is mandatory, better yet let them have a constant and as big as possible area. Our rabbits, run around our flat, actually, after we have secured everything, most importantly cables (!!!!!!! 8) ) !

6: While grooming is not really neccessary, and can actually be _QUITE_ stressful for some rabbits, according to their character, the nail clipping is necessary if they don't run around on concrete all day and abrase them this way ;) .

Else: Nice vid!! 8]=]

Regards,

- Michael

You should NEVER lift a rabbit like that - you can cause serious damage. The correct method is to scoop under the back legs and support the front legs. The information given here is barely enough to meet the most basic needs of these highly social and intelligent animals. The diet section is also misinformed - cereals should be avoided due to their high starch content, as should dried fruit and iceberg lettuce.

I suggest anyone watching this go to the House Rabbit Society - www.rabbit.org for more accurate information.

I'm concerned with how little good information is in this video. *Never* scruff a rabbit. That is not the correct way to handle. The diet should have a very good quality pelleted feed in preference to mix but that should only be a very small part of the whole diet. Mostly it should be hay/straw, grass preferably where available and dark green leafy veg - which are very good for rabbits and *do not* as one poster claims, cause diarrhoea.
There is no mention made of vaccination against myxomatosis nor viral haemhorragic disease and both of these are vital in the UK. Teeth checks are not covered nor potentially killer diseases like snuffles.
In short, there is too much missed out and too much misinformation.
