Great advice! My terrapin 'Daphne' was 27 years old in Jan 2007. I got her when I was 16 and we have grown up together. She has always been blind as her eye sockets never developed properly so has to be hand fed, I put her in a separate tank so as not to dirty her tank water too much. She is fed twice per week on veg, cat food, meat and she also like a bit of fruit. She is great!!

Allow me to comment on your terrapin video. Firstly by all means handle them far more than necessary as they can grow to know you and will not then hiss or bite but can become very placid and friendly. Terrapins are actually community creatures so are happier in groups than alone and will eat better and be more relaxed. Vitamin powder should be used on all food whenever fed. Although turtles may be the name used elsewhere they are actually very different - they are not freshwater creatures. Red eared do you mean? Really I am scared that you can put such poor advice on the internet but I think this is the problem with the internet today.

I can handle my RES so easily.They are so tame.

Hi, my neighbour found a terrapin wandering along the lane,so we have put it into our wildlife pond, where it has so far spent a day and a night,it seems quite happy,. Mark says: - SALMONELLA All terrapins have salmonella, and if they don't this is very out of the ordinary. This is harmful if ingested, and can cause very unpleasant symptoms. It is critical you wash your hands with soap or antibacterial gel after handling your terrapin. KOI and TERRAPINS IN PONDS Terrapins at 4 inches long can damage koi by biting their fins, which can get infected and cause death. However, terrapins grow quickly, and tou are right to be concerned. You need to catch this fella before he gets big enough to kill the carp. Good luck catching him Hope these help, please ask more questions, and Mark will answer them. If its fuzzy, it could be a fungal infection. Add some aquarium salt to the water and soak them in for a bit everyday. Otherwise, try to keep them out of the water, and raise the temperature (i.e., an incandescent light or direct sunlight). If the problem persists, take it to a vet.

I have four terrapins. 2 yellow bellies and 2 ridge backs. They are brilliant. They have very individual characters and love being handled. I have also have 3 cats which are terrified of them as they are not sure what they are. They're excellent pets and aren't difficult to look after as long as you know what you are doing. You can get them from most good pet shops however do shop around as the price can vary a lot.

hi everyone, it sounds like your terrapins need help fast, take them to a vet. Iv read most comments and it sounds like the ph balance in the water isnt right, you need to de chlorinate the water otherwise your terrapins will feel like swimming in bleach, with all those nitrates burning there skin will stress them out, you can buy water treatments on ebay few a few pounds. they also need a good filter that will filter a tank twice as large as the one you have and they need folidge to hide in with a dry basking area with a uvb lamp (helps them grow & digest & obsorb calcium properley) and they need a heat lamp to warm them up. My terrapins are fit an healthy and are fed on river shrimp, dried fish, complete pellets and i also add in there water a few droplets of liquid calcium as this is vital for them, i also think you need to worm them every now an then and it sounds like the guys terrapin with a black thing in it is a infection or parrasite needs vet treatment asap!! hope this is helpful to you all, kindests and best of luck nicky x

if you were to breed your terrapins such as the red eared one for example, the male an female would flirt with each other and can do this for a long time before they will accept each other for breeding, you might notice the male with his long claws waving in front of her face, this is to keep her calm and to give him anough time to do his thing and the actual breeding will usually happen at night in privacy of other aqutic life, terrapins will lay thier eggs when the climate and season is right, usually in spring you can trick them by adding a jug or two of cold water to their tank to indicate that spring has arrived, they also have be a adult obviously. they like to lay there eggs in a deep box of soft warm damp sand kept at a continous temp, then once shes layed her eggs they will have to be carefully removed and incubated, theres alot to write including her appitite will increase by double while producing eggs and before she lays she will go off her food completely, if you try googleing it there is a few good articles about it, nicky x

to nicky thank u for takin time to reply to us. my terripan "raffi" has this black thing inside him that has been there for a long time now. i have been to see 2 dif ferent vets,have taken videos on my mobile 2 show them an idea of what i was trying to explain.this black thing comes out all dif shapes and sizes.it pulseates and controls raffis movements.he has no control over it at all when its out.it is approx 1cm in length,most of the time.it also comes out the same size of his shell.when this apears it has trailed him around the tank,violently.this goes on for a FULL HOUR.no vets can explain what it is.please help.michelle

TO MICHELLE, im so sorry to hear that you havent had any luck with the vet, my advice would be to take your terrapin( in a tupperware box with a wet flannel in it soaked in his tank water) straight to the vet again or a reputable aqurium center, and say you suspect it is a worm, the vet will give you a wormer to give him (if its a worm), itl cost about £12 to £18 and its easy to give, you could even hide it in a bit of dried fish. Or a parasite other meds will be required. Its very important you take him direct to a vet as this could potentially kill him, this parasite if its not treated, You will need to completely clean out and disinfect his tank and supplies as soon as hes being treated to stop contamination, you can get a charcoal filter to put in the existing filter you have (its black) this will take out all of the left over medication in the tank,, once hes all better, i truly hope he gets better soon, please keep me informed and good luck nicky xx

Hi. I have one still small red eared and just got another even smaller one so they would have a mate. For some reason the smaller one has been digging himself into the soil and completely buying himself. I dug him out after two days and found him still alive and active but over night has dug himself in again. I like the soil in the aquarium as plants grow in it and they like to climb up in the leaves. But now I'm wondering if soil is no good? or is this normal behaviour I shouldn't worry. Update on the digging red ear. So far we seem to be okay. One stays above ground for the most part and only occasionally digs himself in a bit. The other goes under for a day or two and then resurfaces to eat and swim. I do keep the UV light on all the time (night and day) to make sure they are getting enough light for their shells and it is warm enough so I'm not sure if this is too much light and the one is hiding from it. But as I say, otherwise they seem fine so far.

do you have the right set up? example; tank, basking rock(S) uv lamp, heat lamp, filter that can filter twice the size of his tank, pebbles, fake plants, water treatments such as a friendly bacteria and de chlorinater, it would help if you had another turtle with him as he sounds stressed probably due to the ph balance in the water and hes on his own, itll take about a week for him to settle in properly, if he hasnt eaten anything by day 4 he needs to see the vet.
