Give your timeless diamond jewellery the proper care it deserves.
Hi, I'm Cherie Birks from Cool Diamonds in London, Hatton Garden, and I'm a goldsmith here and I've been a goldsmith for nearly 10 years and I trained for that in Australia. But apparently, we sell diamonds mounted in platinum, 18-karat white gold and 18-karat yellow gold. I'm here to demonstrate polishing and resizing of rings and diamond jewellery.
Hi. We're going to talk about care for your jewellery, in particular, your diamond jewellery. So, there are a few things to consider to care for your jewellery to ensure its longevity.
Take some time to inspect your jewellery regularly. You really need to check the clause because they can loosen up over time and because, especially with rings, your hand will be doing things all the time and they might get knocked or loosen over time so you really need to check that. Wear your jewellery for appropriate task.
I mean, don't wear it playing sports or doing gardening or anything too rough because it will really damage your jewellery. Store it correctly, preferably in the packaging that it came with. Especially with rings, you don't want to store them bunched up altogether because the metals will rub on one another, and necklaces, you'll need to lay them flat because the metal can stretch out over time or if they get all tangled up, you know, it will ruin the metal as well.
Earrings, do store those in the package they came in as well. It will keep them dust-free and keep them looking sparkly because the dust won't get to them. Keep your jewellery in a clean dry place as well.
A lot of the time, moisture in the air can damage the metal and tarnish it as well and it will keep your diamonds grease and dust-free again. Try to keep each piece of jewellery separate so that, again, they don't rub on each other. Definitely try not to wear your jewellery when swimming or in spas.
The chlorine in the water is quite corrosive to your metal so that will really damage the metal and will also make it tarnished quite badly. Avoid wearing your jewellery when you are cleaning at home. A lot of household products like bleaches and that sort of thing will really damage the metal as well.
It's corrosive and it may erode your metal and it won't necessarily damage the diamonds but it will ruin the metal that's holding them in. So, a professional cleaning is highly recommended and I would advise you to get more precious items of your jewellery like engagement rings or diamond earrings, those sorts of things cleaned perhaps once a year. Of course, white gold, you would need to get rhodium plated as well once a year.
But generally, just keep an eye on them, keep them clean at home and that will ensure longevity of your jewellery. .
