How To Care For Your Lawn In Spring
Rob Scott from Holland Park in London shows you how to care for your lawn in Spring, to reduce weeds and create an attractive lawn.
Step 1: You will need
- Granular weed and feed for lawns
- A spring-tined metal rake
- A long handled garden fork or hollow tiner
- A brush
Step 2: Applying weed and feed
You can buy weed and feed mix for your lawn from garden centres, which fertilises grass and kills weeds. Apply the mix to the lawn when the grass is dry according to the quantity per metre instructions on the bag. For more information see VideoJug's 'How to apply 'weed and feed' to your lawn'. Wait 2 weeks for the weedkiller to kill the weeds and moss, and try and avoid walking on the lawn during this time.
Step 3: Scarifying
This process removes dead material from the lawn while stimulating the grass to produce runners and side shoots which will thicken up the lawn. Pull the rake across the lawn towards you, raking vigorously to remove the thatch and dead moss. Ensure the tines reach well into the soil surface. Repeat the raking at 30 degrees.
Step 4: Aeration
Aerate the soil by spiking the lawn with a garden fork. Insert the fork and then lean back to open up the holes to let in more air. You can also use a hollow tiner which will pull out a plug of soil. Do this in a grid pattern across the lawn with approximately 10 centimetre gaps.
