Squirrels! People tend to think of squirrels as these cute fluffy creatures in the garden. However, as we say in pest control, if you shave a squirrel's tail, you are actually left with a rat. And at the end of the day, a squirrel does far more damage in a loft space than a rat will ever do and they will love the insulation in your loft space which will create for them a lovely harbourage to live and breed.

Quite often, you will be woken up at night by the noise of the squirrels running along the joists. However, when you go up there, you will see the damage that a squirrel can do. They will chew through the joists.

They will chew through plastic water pipes. They can chew through lead water pipes, and the danger then becomes: they will also chew through the electric cables. Now, how do you keep the squirrels out of your property? Well, they normally find their way in if there is damage to the fascia boards or the soffit boards underneath the loft space, or any crack or something in the top of the house which is a damage to the property that needs repairing.

Now, the first thing to do is to get up there, get your local builders to make good any damage to the fascias and soffits. However, you can only do that after the squirrels have been got rid of. Now, it's illegal to trap a live squirrel and then release it back out into the wild.

They are vermin and if they are in your loft space, then they need, unfortunately, to be killed. The only way to satisfactorily do this is by the use of break back traps which need placing in the loft, and if they are baited properly with peanuts, they will very, very quickly take care of the squirrel population in the loft. Obviously, it's not a nice thing to do and the best way to do this is by using a professional pest control company such as CleanKill.

We are not allowed to bait outside in your gardens, so the only thing that you can do is to make sure that you get rid of the ones that are living in your house, and then you make good any damage, which is how they were getting into the property in the first place.
