How To Catwalk
A professional model discusses the various types of catwalk modelling, explaining why certain attributes that may help a girl succeed in one area of the business could be a liability in another.
So, how to catwalk. Well, catwalk modelling is, of course, very unique. Firstly, anybody that really wants to become a top catwalk model should be with one of the top editorial model agencies.
So, we're thinking Models One, Storm, Elite maybe, in New York, and so on. So, you really want to aim for those huge and very strong model agencies. If you're thinking about just technically how to walk, there are many different ways.
I remember in the eighties, there were some models that used to swing their arms like this, but nowadays there are very straight walks. So for instance, high fashion shows, you will get the catwalk model which can look often very androgynous, and it's very straight, and the walk is almost like lifting your knees. Sometimes, it looks like a little bit of a pony.
There's no personality in the walk. The point of a catwalk model is for the audience to look at the clothes, not the model. So you're not going to find the most pretty or the most commercial models usually at these high fashion shows.
Now, there is a big difference between doing catwalk shows. So, you've got your high-end editorial, then you have local fashion shows, and that's probably where a lot of girls do start off modelling. So, you link up to a charity, maybe a local boutique, and you start doing the local fashion shows.
Now, that kind of walk is full of personality. It's going to be fun because it's all about a real wonderful, lovely night for residents in the local area. So, that's very different.
A lot of girls that do local fashion shows think that they can then go on and do the high-end fashion shows and it's a completely different market. If you look at catwalk, then with a beauty pageant, that's completely different because a beauty pageant is about the girl having more personality and being warm and friendly. So, it's a completely different catwalk again.
So, if you are going to approach the world of catwalk modelling, think about it. You really need to know your niche. If you are a bit more of an editorial model, go for the top agencies.
You really do need to be about five foot nine, minimum, five foot ten, foot eleven for catwalk. If not, if you're going to do commercial, just enjoy it, but you may not make loads of money out of it. Good luck. .
