In this step by step guide mechanic Naethan Hutchin show you how to remove, clean and adjust drum brakes.
You Will Need
- 1 large screwdriver
- emery cloth
- brake or clutch cleaner
- socket set
Method
Make sure the hand brake is off, then remove the wheel.
Lever off the drum with a large screwdriver, then pull it off completely with your hands.
If there is a build-up on the inside of the drum, you will have to grind it down with an angle grinder until it is flush with the inside of the brake drum.
Rub the edges of the brake shoes with emery cloth to give it better grip.
Check whether the rear brake cylinders have broken seals. Peel back the rubber boot with your screwdriver and have a look to see whether there is any fluid. If it is leaking, they will need to be replaced. Push the pistons back to make sure they have not seized.
Rub the inside of the brake drum with emery cloth.
Clean the brakes with a brake or clutch cleaner.
If you are fitting a new drum or an old drum you have repaired, adjust the shoes out with a screwdriver until the drum just fits.
