Step 1: Lights

You may be asked to check that all lights on the car are working. This includes the head lights, rear fog lights, hazard and brake lights. Operate them one at a time using controls on the dashboard. To check they are working walk around the vehicle, or ask someone else to look if you can't see for yourself

Step 2: Tyres

Tyres must have a sufficient tread depth of at least 1.6mm across three quarters of the tyre width, this can be checked with a tread depth gauge. Make sure the tyres are in good condition by looking for any cuts or bulges. Driving with a defective tyre is dangerous, and could cost you points on your license.

Assess the pressure of the tyres using a reliable pressure gauge. The suggested tyre pressure varies depending on usage and your particular car, find the information by looking in the manufacturer's guide. Not enough pressure affects your fuel consumption, so it's important to get it right. Remember you should only examine and adjust the pressure when the tyres are cold.
