How To Check For Mouth Cancer
How to Check For Mouth Cancer: This video will show you the areas that typically can form sores and mouth cancer that should be checked regularly by yourself or a dentist.
Hi, I'm Brian Halvorsen and I'm a dentist. I've been in practice for over 35 years and I've written a book about my principles on holistic dentistry. The book is called Great Teeth for Life.
In this video, I'm going to explain to look for mouth cancer either by yourself or your friend or your partner or actually at the dentist. During a dental examination, the dentist may actually ask you to poke your tongue out. This may seem slightly peculiar but what he's actually looking for are areas that are most likely to be hidden where you may be developing an unfortunate, say a cancer, a mouth cancer and so he's doing his checkup.
He's also screening you so that it's one of the reasons why it's so valuable to have regular checkups. Now I'm just going to examine the way I would do it. So if I may, could I ask you to poke your tongue out for me.
So what I'm going to do, okay, now look along the side of the tongue here and down here is where there are the likely areas for mouth cancer to occur. This is very healthy and looks good, and I'll do the same on the other side and I'll look down there as well. Now, if you see little lumps and bumps and things, they are quite normal, you know there's various glands and what have you, but we're looking very happy there.
Now, you also may want to look along the cheeks and surfaces all along here. Less likely spots, but you do the whole lot so it's not just looking at teeth. It's looking at everywhere in the mouth.
Off in the roof of the mouth as well, we'll have a look as well and we're looking at the gums. Now fortunately, our patient here has got very healthy teeth and gums and so I can say that we're all clear, everything is fine. If you actually find that you have a sore or a sore spot in the mouth that doesn't seem to go away, then my advice is quickly find a dentist and get it checked out.
It may be nothing but please, it could save your life. So do go if there's anything you're not sure about in the mouth especially the areas we've indicated that this could occur. .
